In looking at the latest results, it looks like at the end of the day, Clinton will end up tied for Second with Edwards, which takes some of the sting out of the day for Clinton and amounts to an even bigger loss for Edwards.

The Des Moines Register (linked above) has one tally in which Edwards is at 29.82% and Clinton at 29.42% and another in which they have rounded up both to 30%.

More significantly, however, is the fact ABC news has Clinton winning one more delegate than Edwards (for reasons that are unclear to me at the moment). If that is the case, Clinton is the second place finisher.

The fact that the delegate counts are as close as they are also points to the fact that the Obama win was not quite as dramatic as the media wants to make it out to be.

    1. PoliBlog ™: A Rough Draft of my Thoughts » Evaluating Iowa Says:

[...] Others have been likewise a bit over the top. For example, Andrew Sullivan’s post on the results is entitled “The Mold is Smashed” wherein he states “the hope they [Obama and Huckabee] have unleashed is palpable.” It just seems that we need to move along a bit before anyone can be said to have unleashed much of anything. The theme continues with a Peggy Noonan piece entitled “Out With the Old, In With the New: Obama and Huckabee rise; Mrs. Clinton falls,” a post by Chris Bowerrs at Open Left called “A New Generation Takes Charge of the Democratic Party,” and a NY Post headline that declares “Clintons no Longer the Life of Party.” While I agree that it is very possible that Obama will eventually get the nomination, could we actually look at the results and then place then in the broader context of the process before making dramatic claims? Clinton hardly suffered a devastating blow last night. [...]

    2. Political Mavens » Yet More Iowa Says:

[...] Look at the numbers and see that Clinton and Edwards are really tied for second in Iowa and Hillary won one more delegate. [...]

    3. MSS Says:

So, why does 100% of the precincts give us 2,948 “votes”?

    4. Fruits and Votes Says:

No winner in Iowa: It was virtually a 3-way tie

Obama has one more projected delegate than the runner-up and two more than the candidate in third place in delegates. Yet Obama is the “winner.”
