Via the NYT: Clinton Aide Sees Problem for Obama.

The context is Obama’s past, especially admitted drug use.

My reaction is: shouldn’t that read something like “Clinton Aide Wants to see Problem for Obama”? Or, really, more to the point: “Clinton Aide Seeks to Create Problem for Obama”?

To wit:

A co-chairman of Mrs. Clinton’s national and New Hampshire campaigns, William Shaheen, raised the question in an interview with The Washington Post. He said voters should study Mr. Obama’s background as they chose a candidate, warning that Republicans would scour for new details about a period of Mr. Obama’s life more than 20 years ago when he admitted using marijuana and cocaine.

Let’s be real: Shaheen isn’t raising the question from an academic standpoint, he is trying to create trouble because Obama is closing on Clinton in Iowa and NH.

And can one get any more transparent and disingenuous than this?

According to The Post’s Web site, Mr. Shaheen said, “It’ll be: ‘When was the last time? Did you ever give drugs to anyone? Did you sell them to anyone?’ There are so many openings for Republican dirty tricks. It’s hard to overcome.”

In other words, Shaheen is just offering some advice/making an observation. After all, it’s those mean Republicans who would ask such questions for political gain, after all!

Thank goodness the Clinton campaign team is in there protecting the other candidates from the dirty tricks that might be pulled by those rascally Republicans!

I hope Obama’s team shows the appropriate thankfulness.

Remember, too much of journalism is a field where ’some say…’ is considered a perfectly acceptable way to launder a rumor.
