Via the BBC: Giuliani anti Palestinian state

Republican presidential hopeful Rudy Giuliani has said he is not in favour of the creation of a Palestinian state, contradicting current US policy.

This little tidbit comes from his much-maligned Foreign Affairs piece.

And what are the chances of this one getting to President? Is he another 1% guy?

  2. Dr. Steven Taylor Says:

He is not a 1% guy at all. He has a chance of being elected, although at this point I am not sure exactly how I would handicap it. He is a top tier Republican candidate for the nomination.

Remember too for a few minutes that the idea that a Palestinian state is not at all a total concensus type issue. Publicly, perhaps - but in private I’m pretty sure there are a lot of people in washington, and out in the population in general, who don’t think it’s such a hot idea. Those types might actually see these comments as a bold, “coming out of the closet” move.

I can name a dozen reasons why sane US policy would not want to make a Palestinian state. It’s not such a ridiculous thing to think.

I happen to think it the wrong position, but I agree that it isn’t ridiculous. What I found interesting about it is that it differs from the Bush administration’s current stance and is, in the contemporary context, a hardline position.

Seems like strange stance from one of our Presidential hopefules.

I would have to better understand the man’s rationale.

A Palestinian state could be either a good thing or a bad thing (for the US) depending on the form that it took. The process would be very important, and what the final product is would be very important to any real qualitative assessment.

As such, I think Rudy’s stance could be either the right thing or the wrong thing for the US to pursue. It would be a matter of context.

I made the comment simply in keeping open for discussion the idea that a Palestinian state *could* be a bad thing for the US; which is not the same as saying it *would* be.

It should be kept on the table for discussion, the Palestinian State, and not taken for granted that it’s the solution to all of the problems of the middle east.
