Back to Newt: La Shawn Barber asks

Will someone please explain to me why I’m seeing headlines like “Gingrich In Affair During Clinton Probe,” as if it’s a revelation?

That’s an easy one: it is Newt’s doing and it is pure political strategy, as I noted in my previous post on the subject.

It is extremely smart to diffuse these things early. Ironically, we forget what a short memory that the voters have, and something that seems like a big deal in a given moment, fades over time. It is afar better to remind everyone about the affairs and the divorces and whatnot now, rather than have it be a Big Issue in Iowa, New Hampshire or in September of 2008.

The principle works for all things big and small that might be a problem. Why else is Barack Obama paying parking tickets from 19 years ago?

Meanwhile, PoliMom has a good post on the subject, and I think reflects the way of lot of folks will react, and continue to react, to Newt and his role in the Clinton impeachment.

Update: I forgot to mention the Barber noted, well before today, that she found Gingrich to be of “low character” and that she could not support him for president.

  1. Steven Plunk Says:

Did he lie under oath about it?

  2. Dr. Steven Taylor Says:

No, he didn’t. Of course, I don’t think he was ever asked under oath.

However, that doesn’t take away the personal failing in question, nor does it take away the political significance of the situation.
