Best Bond?
By Dr. Steven Taylor @ 12:39 pm

(A little lunchtime digression from the more serious news of the day).

Asks Dan Oko in Slate: Was an Australian underwear model the best Bond ever?

That’s easy: no.

On Her Majesty’s Secret Service is far from the worst of the Bond flicks (hmm, Moonraker, anyone?), but it is also far from the best. And how one could prefer Lazenby to Connery is beyond me. I will admit I haven’t seen OHMSS I do recall a decided lack of acting skills by Mssr. Lazenby.

  1. I can’t really comment on Lazenby as I haven’t seen that flick. However, when I was younger I always favored the Roger Moore Bond movies over the Sean Connery ones. I think it was because I saw the Moore movies first (even though the Connery ones actually came first), which probably says more about my age and first impressions than it does about acting skills by either actor.

I thought that Pierce Brosnan made a rather good James Bond also.

  2. When I was a kid, I preferred Moore as well-he was more comic-booky, and plus he was Bond when I first became aware of the movies.

Ultimately, however, I came to favor Connery by far.

  3. If I watched a Connery Bond film now, there is a good chance I would too.

  4. Lazenby is a bad actor? Roger Moore of the raised eyebrow school of acting and kickboxing school of fighting. OHMSS is one of the Best Bond films, it would have been the best if it had been Connery rather than Lazenby.

  5. Lazenby wasn’t that bad. Look at the first outings of nearly all the actors. “Live and Let Die”? “Living Daylights”? “Goldeneye” was so bad it had my eyes glazing over from all the explosions. I am sometimes curious how he might have done had he stayed on.

  6. Note: I never said Moore was a good actor…

  7. Must weight in.

Connery is by far the best Bond, though Dalton, I thought, was awfully good. Moore was pretty good, and I liked him as Bond, but sadly he got saddled with some bad scripts. I hated Brosnan as Bond initially — thought he wasn’t manly enough, too wimpy — but he improved through the films. Lazenby, also, was along those lines: not hard-edged and cynical enough.

However, an important distinction needs to be made between the actor and the story. OHMSS may be my favorite Bond film of all, despite Lazenby’s weak performance. Though I won’t spoil it for any (all two of you, whoever you are) who may not know how it ends, I will say that it absolutely takes a turn no other Bond film has taken.

    And, I liked Moonraker.

  8. Moonraker was the worst Bond I ever saw. It was the first Bond movie I saw in the theater - I was maybe 10 or 11, I think. Even at that age, I was pretty disappointed by it. The spacesuit laser battle was just terrible to sit through.

Now, the next one - For Your Eyes Only - is probably my favorite of all of them. “That’s detente, Comrade!”

  9. All of the Bond men have been pretty entertaining, but I still stick with Roger Moore. The best of all time, with his “For Your Eyes Only” was my favorite! Pierce does a pretty good second best, with Sean coming in third, but YES! Moore has it topped, in my eyes.
