Me Guesses the Pack will Continue to Lose
By Dr. Steven Taylor @ 11:31 am

Why do I think this? I am wholly underwhelmed by the resume of the guy they are about to hire to be their new head coach (via ESPN): Packers to hire 49ers’ McCarthy as coach.

The highlights of his resume?

  • He was Packer’s QB coach during the year that Ray Rhodes was Head Coach, and the team went 8-8.
  • He was the offensive coordinator for the New Orleans Saints in 2000-2004.
  • He was the 49ers OC this last year.

He also was a QB coach and offensive assistant in KC during the 1990s.

Is is just me, or is that one wholly unimpressive set of credentials?

From 2000-2005 only two seasons did the team he coordinate for have a winning record (in 2000 the Saints went 10-6 and in 2002 they went 9-7).

The only explanation is that the guy might appeal to Favre and therefore be an enticement for him to return. Of course, that may be another reason to say that the Pack will continue to lose, because it seems fairly obvious that it is time to start retooling for the future, rather than hoping for one more good year out of Favre.

  2. McCarthy had little to do with Favre. In fact, no one in Wisconsin is really sure GM Ted Thompson wants him back next season. He hasn’t been publicaly begging him to not retire.

  3. In regards to Favre, a Milwaukee TV station had audio of Favre’s brother criticizing the Packers for not keeping Brett in the loop and for not telling him that they plan to make the effort to win next year. I suspect you are right-more losing on the horizon.

  4. My guess: Thompson is hedging his bets that Favre won’t be back. McCarthy has been responsible for the development of Hasselbeck (G.B.), Brooks (N.O.) and Smith (S.F.). He’ll be responsible for developing Aaron Rodgers into a starting QB. A point in McCarthy’s favor - Brooks’ play has been erratic for years, but it really went downhill this past season. Why? McCarthy went to S.F. Smith in S.F. improved over the course of the season. Why? McCarthy went to S.F.

Thompson has committed to rebuilding after looking at the draft and free-agent travesties of Sherman. McCarthy is just the first step. So yes, the Pack will keep losing next year and possibly the year after that. That’s what Thopmson is going to bring. After that, we’ll see. Thompson (and all of us in Cheeseland) hope resurgence begins at that point. If not, the patience of Bob Harlan and the Cheesy Faithful will wear thin.

I only hope Bates stays on.
