  • The Timing, it Appears, is Everything

Forget the substance: timing is everything.

"The timing speaks for itself," said Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, D-N.Y. (USA)

''The timing is very curious, given this has been underway now for this long," said Senate minority leader Tom Daschle, Democrat of South Dakota. (BoGlo)

"The timing of this leak suggests that the White House is more concerned about protecting its political hide than hearing what the commission has to say about strengthening our security," the Kerry campaign said. (Reuters)

My main question is: when would the appropriate timing be?

This is sorta like how, whenever some violent crime happens in a small town, they always find one person to put on the news who says "Things like this aren't supposed to happen here."

Where ARE people supposed to get shot in drug deals?

You know you have no defense when....

In their defense, the events apparently happened months ago, and the investigation has been ongoing for some time. So, the timeliness isn't the same as the "these things aren't supposed to happen here" comment. I suspect there was some deliberate intent in the unveiling. That said, in the current state of presidential campaigning, the timing of almost *everything* is scripted or planned.

That being said, Sandy Berger has got to really pull a rabbit out of his hat or his socks or wherever, to explain this in a believable way. It's just bizarre.

If you were the RNC and planning to leak this, wouldn't you have better timing?

Say, September? Or maybe during the Democratic convention? Or maybe if and when Berger got some play as a "close" advisor -- tying him to Kerry -- so that the first news reports would have trouble saying he was just an "unofficial" advisor?

Look... it doesn't matter when this was released. The Dems would've questioned the timing. That's the only thing they can question! They all know he's guilty as sin.

    In a word: Never.

After the election, of course. And quietly under the radar. Especially if Kerry wins.
