The MNF Booth: The ESPN Version
By Dr. Steven Taylor @ 8:47 am

Via the Houston Chronicle: ESPN: Tirico, Theismann, Kornheiser in Monday Night Football booth

ESPN announced today that Mike Tirico will be its play-by-play voice for Monday Night Football next season, signaling the apparent departure of Al Michaels to NBC, where he is expected to join John Madden on NBC’s new Sunday night package.

ESPN said Tirico will join former Redskins quarterback Joe Theismann and Washington Post columnist and Pardon the Interruption co-host Tony Kornheiser in the Monday Night booth. Suzy Kolber and Michele Tafoya will be the sideline reporters.

Interesting about Michaels-actually having him go with Madden to CBS is just fine with me, although it will be weird to have MNF without him.

Tirico should do a good job, so not problem there.

I am quite pleased to hear that Mr. Tony is going to be in the booth-he is one of my favorite sports analysts, so that should be cool.

Now, if only they could find something to do with Theismann…

  1. I must be the only person who thinks Mr. Tony is a windbag who knows far less than he appears to know on PTI. I’m just glad for the mute button.

  2. I have always liked Kornheiser-I enjoyed his radio show when it was on ESPN Radio and also his writing and PTI is one of my daily shows-although I will grant that it wouldn’t be were it not for the magic of TiVo.

  3. I think Michaels is joining Madden on NBC, not CBS, for the Sunday night game.

And, Tony Kornheiser currently does a 2-hour radio show in the morning in the DC-area. I enjoy the show, but it remains to be seen how he will do on MNF. Generally, I’ll watch if the matchup is good, but if the game turns out to be a 40-0 yawner by halftime, Tony K. (or anyone, for that matter) is not enough to keep me from turning on something else.

  4. Pardon, NBC-too many networks to keep track of.

And you are correct: I watch the games regardless of the announcers. Still, I prefer Tony over, say, Boomer Easiason or any number of other folks.

He may bomb in that format, I wil grant.
