Apparently, he isn’t in Venezuela, despite reports earlier today that he had fled.

Via the BBC:  Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi appears on state TV.

The BBC piece also has this classic bit of authoritarian-speak:

A statement described the protesters as "terrorist gangs made up mostly of misguided youths", who had been exploited and fed "hallucinogenic pills" by people following foreign agendas.

It is like a parody from some pre-internet Soviet style attempt at spinning the news.

Yet another example of the real world consequences of plagiarism.

Via the BBC:  German ‘plagiarism’ minister Guttenberg drops doctorate

German Defence Minister Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg has temporarily renounced his doctorate title following accusations of plagiarism.

German media allege several passages of his 2024 thesis were lifted from other people’s work.

The minister strongly denied the claims. He said there were undoubtedly mistakes and he was unhappy about them.

According to the piece, Guttenberg is a rising star in his party, which would mean being the conversation about future chancellors.   As such, the cost of this scandal may not just be whether people call him “Herr Doktor” or not.

So says a new PPP poll:

Do you think Barack Obama was born in the
United States?
Yes ……………………………………………………….28%
No…………………………………………………………51%
Not sure…………………………………………………21%

Full poll here [PDF]

Part of me find this is to be an almost unbelievable number, as the evidence on this issue if overwhelming.  Yet, on the other hand I have read too many “arguments” about Obama’s birthplace and have dealt with a sufficient number of birther-oriented commenters over time to know that the view is still quite prevalent.

That large chunks of the electorate can be so difficult to persuade on such a simple topic makes it easier to understand why we cannot come to reasonable consensus on fiscal policy.

Interestingly, with those GOP voters sure that Obama was born in the US, “Palin’s favorability rating is 41-52…But with birthers, she has a soaring 83-12.”
