While there have been numerous breathless accounts of how Podcasting will supplant blogging or the evening news, I have noticed a trend of late that may show the real value of podcasting. First, numerous talk radio outlets are putting their programming into MP3 format for downbloading onto iPods and the like. This strikes me as a great idea, and further contributes to the random access direction that mass media are headed these days.
Another application, that strikes me as more useful and more interesting than home-made talk radio shows is discussed in today’s NYT: With Irreverence and an iPod, Recreating the Museum Tour. The idea, for example, that actual experts/entertaining people might make their own tours available via download is actually a pretty interesting one. A mass market? No, but interesting nonetheless.
For that matter, the museums themselves could provide the downloads via their sites.
Dear Steven,
At BlogNashville Podcasting and Video were the rage. I do not think they will take over because only 40% of America has high speed internet since we do not have broad band and without highspeed podcasting and video do not work well.

I think the guy who got busted giving “unauthorized” tours at Disneyland (he wasn’t charging a fee he was just putting out info that didn’t fit the Disney PR dept. canon for Disneyland history) is doing a tape recorded version now for people to get and I think they were planning on making it available for MP3/podcasting.
