Kinsley on the Decline of Newspapers
Michael Kinsely has an amusing column in today’s LAT on the decline of newspaper readership.
On a serious note: do all these discussions of the decline of newspaper circulation take into account the inrease in web readership on these selfsame papers?

No. Online readership isn’t as tangible to advertisers at this point in time, and so the profits aren’t there like they are in the regular paper.
Plus, online readership is transitory, and free. You don’t find a lot of people selling subscriptions online yet.

That, of course, makes sense. And economically, I understand why that number wouldn’t matter.
Wht I have noted (and this column isn’t such a case) that some seem to equate the decline in circulation with a decline in news consumption.

For a traditional newspaper journalist, a decline in newspaper readership *does equal* a decline in news consumption.
