Via Reuters: Bush demotes Army general in Abu Ghraib scandal
A one-star Army Reserve general became the first high-level military officer punished in the Abu Ghraib prisoner abuse scandal on Thursday when President Bush demoted her to the rank of colonel.Brig. Gen. Janis Karpinski was disciplined after Army leaders deemed her job performance “seriously lacking” and accused her of concealing a past shoplifting arrest.
The odds that she is the only person deserving such punishment are small, although I wonder as to whether any other such discipline will be forthcoming.
The shoplifting business is bizarre and, quite frankly, not relevant to this matter.
Update: James Joyner: “It’s amazing this action took so long.”
Although the shoplifting arrest might have impinged on her ability to get a security clearance, much less a sensitive command.

I see the overal significance, but find the juxtaposition in the coverage to be a bit odd.
