If you were an IT guy at a university which was in the process of changing all its urls for university web sites (including faculty sites, the site for checking grades, and all e-mail addresses) would you have done this during finals week?
Just checking.
(At least three students have come in today to tell me that the faculty sites are all down–and that is because the link off the main Troy web page has not been changed–it still includes the “st”–i.e., all the faculty sites have gone from being housed on spectrum.troyst.edu to spectrum.troy.edu, but the link on the university’s web page still goes to the “st” version. As they say on the Guinness commercials: “Brilliant!”).
Yeesh.

Just to defend the IT guys, spectrum is not in their control, its ran by another non-tech savy person on the other side of campus.

It is actually a very easy fix in Unix-based systems through the .htaccess file. Either your IT guys are using Windows servers, or they shouldn’t be calling themsleves IT guys.
And, yes, this is not the kind of thing you do during Finals Week.

Steven, unfortunately, I think this is something that comes with certain species of IT folk. For instance, our local IT sent out an e-mail informing everyone that they would be working on the system to back up some files and trouble shoot some things (I’m paraphrasing heavily here), during the last week of the semester. “We don’t expect this to cause any serious down time.”
Within 24 hours, a second e-mail was sent out saying, in effect, someone smarter than us reminded us that timing is everything.

Karl,
You wouldn’t happen to be an IT guy, now would you?

And Jeff: while spectrum may not be run by the campus IT guys, the campus web page is, which is where the main problem is at the moment.
Ah well.
