Today is the tenth anniversary of the Oklahoma City bombing.
I was in a bus in downtown Bogota, Colombia when I heard the news–it was over the radio and I couldn’t hear it very well. I thought I heard that there had been a bombing in the United States, but I couldn’t hear the radio very clearly, so I wasn’t sure. When I arrived at our apartment my wife had seen the news (we had cable, and therefore CNN international and a CBS affiliate out of the US). It was most strange to be out of country when such an even took place–because when a tragedy takes place somewhere else, life goes on unabated–it doesn’t have the same impact on those around you. It was an almost surreal experience.
Today is also the twelfth anniversary of the Branch Davidian fire outside Waco, TX.
Do remember where you were during Waco, as well?

I was at my apartment in Austin (I was in grad school at the time). I got a call from a colleague who told me to turn the TV on.
