Via the NYT: Gingrich Sees Mrs. Clinton as Presidential Nominee in 2024

Former Speaker Newt Gingrich said Tuesday that he thought Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, Democrat of New York, would be her party’s presidential nominee in 2024 and that she would be “very formidable.” He said she might even win.

Mr. Gingrich, a Republican, was addressing the American Society of Newspaper Editors here and was asked if he might challenge her for president in 2024. He did not answer that question, but it was clear he had been watching her.

Newt is an interesting fellow, but he would not be able to win the nomination, nor the presidency. He carries far, far too much baggage, and, like Hillary, is a devisive figure. Apropos of the Feingold discussion earlier in the week, I think that Newt’s own divorce situation would be one of many personal issues that would come back to haunt him. Further, examinaton of the fact that he was having an extramarital affair whilst condemning President Clinton’s own affair would be problematic, to sat the least.

Indeed, it seems for some reason that politician from the 1990s (e.g., Hillary and Newt) seem to think that all of their woes from those days will somehow be forgotten if they run in 2024. Quite the contrary: if they run, we will be re-living it all (and this time it will be in HDTV).

That having been said, Hillary has a far greater chance as her party’s nomination than Newt does of his.

    1. do we see a difference in standards here? newt will be hurt in his own conservative party because he had an affair and because he’s seen as hypocritical by having attacked the president and monica. on the other hand we have the democratic party backing hillary clinton who’s (still darling) husband was impeached in the house but hung on due to politics in the senate; who lied to judges and his public; who had a sexual addiction often played out on white house desktops and in closets and government limos; was disbarred; who took money to pardon felons. then hillary herself stole things from the white house (though she’s been let of the hook because she took them back—bleh!), ‘lost’ and shredded files, carries the smoke and stench of scandals and moneyhandling throughout her life, goes to great extremes to handle the women in her husband’s, lied at one time about bill’s never having had an affair with so and so; hugged yassar arafat and handed him a good sized amount of money and channeled eleanor roosevelt for advice. and that’s only some of the stuff we know about. now we h ave hillary feeling she has to move to the RIGHT to sink her claw into “values”. what? can’t she find or take that ground in left/liberal territory??? so when it comes to hypocrisy and double standards what are we looking at here???
