Wow
I hadn’t looked a the historic numbers, but the following factoid is pretty remarkable:
Reid, 64, takes command of a party that will have only 44 seats when the new Congress convenes in January, fewer than at any time since Herbert Hoover sat in the White House, according to records on the Senate’s Web site.
It is a 74-year low.

Is not the percentage even worse? Since there were only 48 states, was not the margin then 52-44, instead of 55-44 (1 independent) now?

How many did we have in 1994? Didn’t we have 55 then?
That leaves them with with 45 in 94, same as this year. Unless of course, you actually consider Jim Jeffords an independent. I don’t.

You make a point, insofar as in the 105th and 106th the numbers were 55-45.
