Bryan S. of Arguing with Signposts makes the case that using unique links as a metric is a idea whose day has gone.
He makes a valid point: traffic is really the more significant measure of a blog’s popularity (certainly of its readershi). Traffic is also a more dynamic measure than unique links.
The only problem with using traffic is that there isn’t a standard measure. Sitemeter is the closest to an accepted standard, but not everyone has a Sitemeter, and it isn’t perfect, for that matter.

And not everyone is listed in the TTLB, either. If a blog is read by a lot of people but not linked via blogrolls, for instance, it wouldn’t count as “influence,” even though it would have a good deal of influence.
Of course, there is no perfect measure, as in any bit of counting.

And RSS feeds don’t add in at all.
