When I noted the weird disclaimer at OSM this morning over their name, I wasn’t wholly tuned into the story. One can find more details here at a site called, well, “Open Source” which has a production company called, well, “Open Source Media.”

Now, as the disclaimer notes, it is probably the case that “Open Source Media” isn’t trademarkable, however, it seems strange to me to pick a name that is an acronym for something that you can’t register and that isn’t a tad more distinctive. Quite honestly I am not sure that I don’t prefer the more whimsical PJ Media (although I recognize the downside).

Well, regardless of all that, the part that really gets me is that the OSM folks could have avoided a snafu on day two if they had just used Google.

This is especially amazing to me personally given my own experience with the Google-challenged Seattle Times a year or so ago.

Really, how an people who practically live on the internet not Google their name idea?
