Hot on the heels of WaPo’s hard-hitting tie-bulging story, comes the NYT and In Capital and at the Court, Baseball Rules which asks the question we have all been afraid to ask:
Why are so many Washington figures, including a long list of Supreme Court justices, so devoted to the game? Easy, said Carter G. Phillips, a Washington lawyer and an old softball teammate of Judge Alito: “Baseball’s the perfect sport for nerds.”“It doesn’t require a huge amount of athletic ability to play,” Mr. Phillips said. “And it’s got this cerebral component that appeals to people like Sam.”
And the story includes the hard-to-find Alito 94 card:

Man, talk about a paper trail!
Again, I think this kind of stuff ultimately helps the nominee, as silly as it may be from a news perspective.

It’s the Phillies! If Harriet Miers can be deemed unqualified based on second-class law school and jobs that just didn’t prepare her for the job, I’m afraid a lot of hay can be made about a man so dillusioned he wanted to play for the Phillies!

As a conservative and a Phillies fan, I love this story. By the way, I’ve written a little bit about it on my blog:
