Bainbridge’s quote of Sullivan shall be the most decisive reason anyone needs. “Because he could”. Most “conservatives” I know are much more “anti-liberal” than conservative. ie - they’ll vote republican next election regardless of how angry they are at this choice.
The 2nd most important reason - no skeletons. Roberts had no skeletons. Meirs has no skeletons.

Also, Steven Taylor has reactions here and here. He, like me, doesn’t know quite what to think at this point. Frankly, right now, I just think it’s a really weird choice.
