ABC News partially answers the question.

Harriet Miers?
We will not know Ms. Meirs impact on the court for months if not years. Right now I smell a disaster in the making.

As a liberal I’m pretty happy with the selection. Given that your party has the White House, Senate, and House, getting a mild-mannered moderate is a gift. I for one am not going to look a gift horse in the mouth.
I do think this was the result of all the problems y’all have been having lately. Whatever your position on the issues, you’re getting a beating for the war, Katrina, DeLay, Frist, Abramoff, Coingate, etc., etc. The nuclear option was just too politically volatile to risk at this point in the game.
With luck, this will be the last one y’all get to put up.
