Via the AP: Up to 20 Dead in Fire Aboard Evacuees’ Bus
A bus carrying elderly evacuees from Hurricane Rita caught fire early Friday on a gridlocked highway near Dallas, killing as many as 20 people, authorities said.“We believe it’s going to be closer to 20 fatalities,” Dallas County sheriff’s spokesman Sgt. Don Peritz said.
How awful.
Update: The death toll continues to rise. It was at at least 30 according to NPR and was likely to rise. A Dallas Fireman stated that it was the worse vehicle fire he had ever seen. Current speculation is that the fact that many of the people on the bus had personal oxygen supplies that that was part of what allowed to fire to be so quick and intense.
