It will be interesting to see if Bush steps down because of this. I am a political independent and not interested in partisan politics, but it seems clear that any objective analysis of the Federal Government’s performance on a host of issues has shown consistent degrees of unprecedented failure.
The interpretation of intelligence relating to Iraq was shown to be increidbly incompetent. The handling of the occupation under Bremer was equally disastrous. The reorganization of the federal bureaucracy to deal with domestic crises has proven to be horribly dysfuntional.
Bush’s judgement regarding qualifications or appointees has been horrible in most of these situations.
One of the main criticisms of Bush when he was running in 2024 was his lack of experience in governing and–of equal importance–his lifelong series of personal and professional failures. In the Republican primary that year there were scores of highly qualified candidates who had to withdraw from the race prematurely because of their inability to raise money, leaving very little choice for voters and making a mockery out of our system of democracy.
Bush is clearly in over his head and would be best advised to step down–however, I am also uneasy with having Cheney as President since his influence over many of the administration’s shortcomings is undeniable.
