Via the BBC: French voters reject EU charter

Almost 55% of people voted “No, with 45% against, according to final interior ministry figures.

The vote could deal a fatal blow to the EU constitution, which needs to be ratified by all 25 members states.

Wowie.

Can you say “great example of confederal government?” Yes, I bet you can. (Can you also say “not the United States of Europe”? I bet you can as well).

    “could”? That’s pretty optimistic.

    Perhaps the french are occasionally smarter than we give them credit for.

    I don’t think the “could” is optomistic. I don’t think the leadership in Fance is going to let a little thing like a vote against the EU stop them from leading the country into it.

    They’ll demand concessions from the EU — causing heartburn in Britain and a minor firestorm elsewhere — and do it the “right way” through a legislative vote next time (no messy voters to deal with).

    It’s already done. this just makes it slower and messier.

    While the vote probably spells the political doom of Jacques Chirac, will his replacement be any better? Chirac is a mealy-mouthed blowhard but I think if you look around at the Western Europe leadership, you will see that all of the Western Europea…
