Earlier in the week I had noted the possibility that Sergio Fajardo would drop out of the Colombian presidential race and join up with Antanas Mockus of the Green Party.  It appears that this is, in fact, going to happen, as Mockus has published a formal letter of invitation to Fajardo on his web site.   It had already been reported earlier today via Mockus’ Facebook feed that a formal announcement on the vice presidential candidate would come tomorrow (Sunday).  One presumes that the invite would not have been made public if it was not already known that it would be accepted.

This shows the advantage under Colombian law of a late primary (the Green Party and the Conservatives held theirs on the 14th of March, while the Liberals  and Alternative Democratic Pole held theirs last year).   The parties with no primaries or early ones had to name VP candidates before March 14th.  However, it was possible for the Greens to make a strategic alliance in the face of information from the congressional elections (the party that Fajardo was loosely affiliation with did very poorly, for example)1 and later polls before choosing running mates.

This move will help move Mockus closer to being the true opposition candidate (i.e,. anti-uribista candidate).  The question becomes what will the Liberal and Polo candidates do at this stage–both are polling quite poorly at the moment (5-6% range).  Indeed, Semana notes that PL candidate Pardo is underpolling in terms of his numbers versus PL identification in the population.   Although Pardo has proclaimed that he would make it to the second round in a recent interview with El TiempoWhether that represents self-delusion or just typical political bravado is unclear.
