Of course, the fact that I am over 6’2” and weigh about 200 lbs affect my view of the situation, but still.

Hotel Shinjuku 510’s capsules, no larger than 6 1/2 feet long by 5 feet wide, and not tall enough to stand up in, have become an affordable option for some people with nowhere else to go as Japan endures its worst recession since World War II.

Beats being homeless, of course.  But sleeping in one of those things would be a challenge (to me, at least).

I’ve stayed in capsule hotels a couple of times while in Tokyo–they are actually not that bad.

One caveat for my experience is that I normally stayed at one the first night after arriving in Japan following a trans-pacific flight. So, I was tired as hell and could probably sleep through anything.

If you have ever traveled on an Amtrak sleeper, they are a little larger than those capsules.

I agree, though, living in one for longer than three or four nights would get tiresome.
