Via the BBC: Brazil calls Obama over US bases

Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva expressed his concerns in a phone call to President Obama, Brazil’s foreign minister said.

He wants guarantees that US troops will be restricted to fighting drugs and terrorists within Colombia only.

Lula wants Obama to attend the UNSASUR meeting that is scheduled for next week in Buenos Aires. To my knowledge he isn’t scheduled to attend. Indeed, it would be unusual, if not historic, for a president of the United States to be that responsive to the concerns of Latin American presidents, especially to the point of an on-the-fly change of schedule. In will be interesting to see what type of representation, if any, the US has at the meeting.
