Via the Washington Independent: McCain Campaign Investigated, Dismissed Obama Citizenship Rumors.

Quite frankly, that they looked into it makes perfect sense. However, they concluded that there wasn’t anything to it:

While they ruled out any chance of the ‘birther’ lawsuits holding up in court, lawyers for the McCain campaign did check into the rumors about Obama’s birth and the assertions made by Berg and others. “To the extent that we could, we looked into the substantive side of these allegations,” said Potter. “We never saw any evidence that then-Senator Obama had been born outside of the United States. We saw rumors, but nothing that could be sourced to evidence. There were no statements and no documents that suggested he was born somewhere else. On the other side, there was proof that he was born in Hawaii. There was a certificate issued by the state’s Department of Health, and the responsible official in the state saying that he had personally seen the original certificate. There was a birth announcement in the Honolhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9V1nmn2zRMc&feature=player_embeddedulu Advertiser, which would be very difficult to invent or plant 47 years in advance.”

Indeed.

That crazy people believe that Obama is really a citizen of Kenya is not surprising–heck. that are people who believe that the US government perpetrated 9/11, that the Holocaust did not happen, that the Apollo 11 landing was faked, and so forth. However, what I continue to find unnerving is that members of Congress (albeit, a small number) and numerous political commentators are insisting on feeding the story (e.g., Lou Dobbs, Rush Limbaugh and G. Gordon Liddy, to name three). And while I am sure that many will dismiss those guys as ideological provocateurs, the bottom line is that they all have large audiences who will be influenced by this nonsense. At a minimum it certainly fuels the kooks.

Remember, that McCain himself was not born in the US, so he probably didn’t want to bring up the issue. If the McCain & Obama camps had gotten into a “birther” war, they would have opened a hole for the emergence of a “President Nader.”

McCain simply didn’t want to bring the country down that route so he hid the story.

Yep, John McCain, the Panachurian Candidate!
