Via the AP: Swine flu virus starting to look less threatening

The swine flu virus that has frightened the world is beginning to look a little less ominous. New York City officials reported Friday that the swine flu still has not spread beyond a few schools. In Mexico, very few relatives of flu victims seem to have caught the virus.

One flu expert says there’s no reason to believe the new virus is a more serious strain than seasonal flu.

Perhaps we can all start to calm down now, yes?

I am inclined to agree with the “calm down” perspective. Yet, apparently there are two cases now in Europe of transmission to people who have not themselves been to Mexico. And the 1918 pandemic apparently was minor in spring compared to what it was the following fall.

Can’t be sure yet if the threat is small or for real, or at least that is my take.

I have no problem with caution. It just seems that we have reacted well out of proportion. I was listening to the BBC’s “World Have Your Say” and one of the reporters was taking about being treated like a leper because he had been to Mexico. In general there has to be a long list of activities (like, say, driving) that are of a higher risk to all of us than H1N1A.

Wonder if too many people read King’s The Stand as a survival manual.

But agreed its time to calm down, accept we are mortal and quit being afraid of our shadow.
