Via WaTiL EXCLUSIVE: Gingrich, Steele duel privately for RNC job
A behind-the-scenes battle to take the reins of the Republican National Committee is taking off between former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and former Maryland Lt. Gov. Michael S. Steele.Neither man will acknowledge his interest in the post, but Republicans close to each are burning up the phone lines and firing off e-mails to fellow party members in an effort to oust RNC Chairman Mike Duncan in the wake of the second consecutive drubbing of Republican candidates at the polls.
I think that we can treat this is a rumor/speculation at the moment, but one that has some credence. It has seemed to me for some time that Gingrich is angling for a return to public prominence and there is no doubt that he would savor the chance to be seen as a part of the main opposition to the Obama administration. It is a role he knows well, if anything.
Of course, a move by the RNC to take Gingrich as chair would be a retro-move for a party that needs to start thinking about a new set of faces and ideas.
Update: GTL has a set of reactions to this story over at his site.

No Newt… he’ll hurt us even more. Steele would build the future.
