The endorsement of Obama by Powell led me to make the following prediction yesterday:
I will say that as it becomes more and more likely that Obama will win, and as he starts to score acceptance from people like Powell and endorsements from significant newspapers which have never endorsed a Democratic candidate before, I expect that things are going to get even nastier, especially from McCain surrogates, as they will start to feel as if their backs are against the wall.
As if on cue:
Rush Limbaugh (in an e-mail to the Politico):
“Secretary Powell says his endorsement is not about race,” Limbaugh wrote in an e-mail. “OK, fine. I am now researching his past endorsements to see if I can find all the inexperienced, very liberal, white candidates he has endorsed. I’ll let you know what I come up with.”
Buchanan: Alright, we gotta ask a question, look would Colin Powell be endorsing Obama if he were a white liberal democrat…
Given that we have seen other Republicans endorse Obama (for example, Christopher Buckley), the fact that many McCain boosters aren’t exactly on fire for the guy, and the fact that Obama is clearly more popular in the aggregate,1 then it is really that impossible to think that this isn’t about race?
For one thing, Powell has long been known to be fairly moderate. Back when there was speculation that he himself might undertake a run at the White House, there were questions as to whether he would run as a Republican or as a Democrat.
And for the record, I don’t recall Powell ever endorsing that many candidates in that past, so I am not sure that there is some major violation of a standing pattern here. Obviously he endorsed Bush. I think he rather unenthusiastically endorsed Dole in 1996 as well. Beyond that, I’m not sure.
There is little doubt that many who will vote for Obama will do so with some pride and understanding of the historical significance of the first major African-American candidate/likely president, and based on statements made by Powell on MTP, I think he fits into that category. However, to assume that that is the primary motivating factor is to radically oversimplify things. Also, it comes across as an attempt to fuel racial resentment from whites by trying to make the endorsement into some sort of affirmative action decision. (And that is where the “nasty” comes in–really, why even bring it up?).
Beyond any of that, if Obama wins next month, it will not be because he managed to turn race into a winning strategy, it will be because of the serious policy failures of the current administration and the very serious damage it has done to the Republican Party. It will also be because McCain has not run a very good campaign. Oh, the two wars (neither of which can said to be a smashing success, shall we say) and a major financial crisis don’t help, either.
However, at the end of the day (election day, that is), I think what we are going to discover is that this election was not a typical liberal v. conservative contest and that a lot of voters who normally vote GOP will cross-over out of an inability to endorse the continuation of the policies of the current administration. And make no mistake, despite the protestations of McCain and Palin, there will be significant congruency between Bush foreign and domestic policy and McCain foreign and domestic policy. Indeed, one of McCain’s failed opportunities in this campaign has been to really spell out how he would govern differently than Bush and he failed to make that case.

Powell’s endorsement of Obama is a clear sign that this election is about race. Blacks already receive many additional opportunities because of their skin color. Now it is likely that we are going to elect an extremely under experienced president based on his race. People wake up! We already have numerous instances of reversed prejudice. This reversed prejudice will only grow if we elect a president solely based on his race.
I would also like to say that I have lost all respect for Powell. In the past I actually would have voted for him if he had run for president. I had no idea he was a racist.
October 20th, 2008 at 8:11 am
“Toxic Words=Toxic Deeds”
That many McCain supporters embrace such words and deeds is evidence of a schizophrenic campaign, and of a man ill at ease with having compromised some essential part of himself.
I have no idea whether he will win or not.I do know there is something to be said for being true to yourself, win,or lose.
The question McCain faces is this:
Would he rather run a losing campaign of which he can be proud of,or a winning campaign of which he cannnot?
An Honorable man wouldn’t need to think twice.
October 20th, 2008 at 8:20 am
Is this not truely a racist political campaign. Sure looks like it, usually people like powell stay out of these matters, especially coming out of the Bush administration, and how everyone think Bush messed things up (I think he inherited it from clinton). He would love to see the first American black president. This obama character comes out of nowhere land and is the lead in a race of politics, paid in endorsements, and by the media. Makes me wonder how really corrupt things are. There are things we are all not aware of and are being led by the nose. I personally think this is all planned out. We dont have a say in it anymore. We are just puppets. And yes monitor this, you will not want to post it.
October 20th, 2008 at 8:23 am
Poor Pat. He thinks that “Blacks receive so many nore opportunities because of their skin color”. Please, for the love of God tell us about those things. Have you been living in a cave somewhere? Why would you annouce your ignorance to the world? If Powell’s endorsement has caused you to loose respect for him, then you never had any. You obviously have no self respect. The bad news is that you are a dinosaur. Black people cannot elect a president. Instead, it will be done by whites who have transcended the ugly nature of racism and moved on to more important issues. Too bad you missed the movement.
October 20th, 2008 at 8:28 am
Janet;
Did you not read McCains response to the Powell endorsement? He listed former Secretary’s of State and various generals and admirals. Why should Powell have to sit by quietly. And pleeese, do not go to the Clinton card to explain the failings of our President. That is so disingenous that it reeks of stupidity. After eight years hes HAS to take some responsibility.

Pat (8:08) and Seth (8:20), your aluminum foil hats are on crooked. Quick straighten them out before the liberal affirmative action conspiracy takes over your brain with their evil microwaves from outer space!
OR, go get educated. Every time somebody accuses obama of being a “socialist” they expose themselves as ignorant fools without any political or historical knowledge. Obama’s tax plan is well within the US tradition, and is not socialist by any stretch of the imagination (socialism pertains to common ownership of the means of production, not tax policy - which is always redistributive, and which has helped us become the greatest country in the world… missiles aren’t free, either is a 21st century education).
Also, go get educated - affirmative action may be something you take issue with, but it has nothing to do with this election. Obama is shattering every fundraising record ever because THE PEOPLE are speaking. His money is not from hollywood - we have giving limits in this country - his money is primarily from millions of individuals each giving $10.. $20.. $50… (actually the average is $84). Affirmative action is the govt telling you that you must pick someone. The govt isn’t making anyone send Obama money. Rather, patriotism is. people who love our country and don’t want to see it end up in the dustbin, where its current policies have it headed.
Come join us in the 21st century Seth and Pat, and take off those silly hats.

Well, I think it’s wrong to say it’s all about race, but race is a factor here. However, Limbaugh et al. are making a mistake when they think Obama only got the Powell nod because he’s black. If Obama were Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton or (pre-scandal) Charlie Rangel, I can’t imagine Powell endorsing him. Instead, Powell may have embraced Obama not because he’s simply black but because Obama is black like him.
To revise and extend some Twitter remarks on the subject, Colin Powell is one of the first postracial black figures in American society. He is the son of immigrants and not the descendant of American slaves, and though he experienced racism in his life, he was free from the overbearing psychic pain that led so many African-Americans towards self-defeatism (think gangster rap culture) and grievance politics (think Jackson and Sharpton). Powell has always been separate from the racial political power structure and instead rose to prominence in the military, which was one of America’s first color blind institutions. When he looks at Obama, who is also an outsider in black America — we should not forget the early disputes between Obama and the black establishment about whether he was “authentically black” — and who also arose meritocratically, rather than through racial rabble-rousing, he may well see a younger version of himself.
Indeed, when white voters look at Obama they may also see a mirror of Colin Powell. Intelligent, articulate, non-threatening (in the sense that he is not coming forward to condemn white America but to work with whites), and charismatic, Obama possesses many of the qualities that made Powell beloved. They also, like Powell, see what they want to see in Obama — liberals will see JFK reborn, moderates will see a thoughtful moderate, while conservatives will see a competent executive to replace the embarrassment of the Bush years. Moreover, just as Rep. Dick Gephardt snarked circa 1996 that many whites would vote for a would-be Powell presidency to prove they weren’t racist, so too will many cast their vote for Obama because they wish to absolve themselves of guilt over America’s original sin.
In calculating Powell’s rationale for endorsing Obama, we must include the weight of McCain’s selection of Palin, the horrible disappointment that McCain has been as a candidate, and the humiliation Powell must have felt as a co-architect of the Iraq War (and of the dismantling of his own doctrine), but we should not discount the appeal of his unique racial solidarity with Obama.
October 20th, 2008 at 9:32 am
Colin Powell is a well respected retired General. He was put in a position to lie and stepped down because of the shame of it period! I trust his word and his judgement because he is at the end of the day an American hero who understands what happened during the Bush administration and is wary of the Republican party because of it. We should all be outraged and wary.
Every time I turn around I hear, “The Blacks are going to take over if Obama is elected” How? Obama is not going to turn his back on the other half of his family. Remember the people who raised him are WHITE! He is not going to turn his back to the benefit of 15% of the population. BTW if blacks only constitute 15% of the population, blacks must be some bad asses to take over the other 85%. Is that why there are so many obstacles in the way for blacks because we somehow have some magic power to overtake millions of people. THAT IS THE FUNNIEST THING I HAVE HEARD IN A LONG TIME IDIOTS! Or is it because everytime there is an obstacle, one of us breaks through and OMG we excel. What a concept it is, if you give a person the right tools to succeed they will. That is a Christian concept and everytime I hear these Christians espouse such race baiting bull, I think of the white ladies screaming profanities at the black students starting at Little Rock High with Bibles in there hands.
The US under the Bush administration has become more socialist in nature than ever before. The liberties that American tout as ours have eroded under the Party that keeps big government out of our personal lives. I see it in my son’s elementary school where I have to have a background check to visit my child in school or observe his class. Or better yet, in Texas if a Republican had his way, my daughter would be required to get a vaccine to protect her against a cancer causing STD at age 14 when I hope and pray that all the wisdom I have bestowed on her should be enough to protect her.
So now we have a person by the way he is a black american, that sees the mess and says, oh my god America, while you fats cats have been sucking the life out of America with your greedy misdeeds, the American people are stuck with debt out the wazzu and we need to turn it around yesterday. Is that not what all Americans not benefiting have been saying. By the way, because the top 5% of Americans have benefited the most from these misdeeds, we want you to pay more of that back. It was not the lower 95% of Americans who benefited from out of control spending so buck up and open your wallets.
October 20th, 2008 at 9:36 am
Matthew,
A very well thought-out comment.
Certainly it is impossible to divorce race from the equation, but my point is that Limbaugh and Buchanan (and others) are simply reducing it to race.
Indeed, take what you said:
and then change Obama’s color to white and I still think you get a Powell endorsement.
October 20th, 2008 at 9:57 am
A government big enough to give you everything you want, is strong enough to take everything you have.
-Thomas Jefferson
Colin Powell’s endorsement is a a “brother” thing
and I lost total respect for him
Basically, he just put yet another woman down loudly and clearly and never was asked to show any proof to us during the Meet the Press discussion of why Obama has this great
supposedly vision. Would he have endorsed Hillary Clinton, I think not.
I was planned from the beginning, dont you find it odd
that Obama was scheduled to be in Fort Bragg territory
the day after, who does he think he’s kidding.
October 20th, 2008 at 10:02 am
Why does this have to be about race? Criticize Powell all you want - but it’s the fault of the Republican party for having such a weak ticket. I’ll take an unproven Obama over McCain’s history any day.
October 20th, 2008 at 10:08 am
I was asked, why does this have to be about race?
Colin Powell just endorsed the most liberal senator
in the Senate. He said he was a conservative.
Now, if you buy his every word on why that’s fine.
But, I dont. It’s just that simple.
John McCain and Sarah Palin both have more experience than
Barak Obama. He came out of nowhere and all I kept hearing was Barak needs to reintroduce himself, week after week after week. Well, if he had accomplished so much prior to running, why did he have to reintroduce himself.
He’s never done a thing for anyone other than his own race that i can find in his entire voting record.
October 20th, 2008 at 10:09 am
Rush Limbaugh is a drug using biggot and an idiot, so who cares what he thinks, but Pat Buchanon who is a analyst on msnbc is a racist, but the problem is he doesn’t know it which shows he is really ignorant as well. Pat wouldn’t last a day as a black person, because it’s no picnic when you deal with racist people every day like him. The one thing Obama running for president did that I love is un-cover racism, which until now people thought was dead. Well it’s not dead its alive and well and living in America.
October 20th, 2008 at 10:12 am
How come no one ever asks white people if they are voting for John McCain because he’s white? Or asks women if they are voting for Sarah Palin because she’s a woman?
When I see those questions in Prime Time news programs or in major Headlines, I’ll put this double-standard to bed.
October 20th, 2008 at 10:14 am
The Republican Party ignores, downplays or attacks the significance of Colin Powell’s endorsement at its own peril. Powell joins a growing list of distinguished conservatives, such as George Will, who have withdrawn their support of the McCain/Palin ticket. A number of large, regional newspapers which had a long history of supporting Republican candidates have also left the fold. The Republican Party used to be a great political party with an inclusive platform that was based more on pragmatism than ideology. Now, it is run by ideologues and fueled by intolerance and bull-headed anger toward a worthy opponent. What we have now is, essentially, a shrinking group of bitter people who are lying only to themselves, fanning the flames that are on each other’s backs. That group is also peppered with ignorant and potentially dangerous bigots who seem to be living in a pre-Civil War America. It’s great to support your candidate to the end, no matter who comes out against him. But what’s happening now is more insidious than that. Anybody who endorses Obama is a flawed human being with a self-serving or racist agenda. It’s very sad to see this mentality emerge in the final days of this very crucial election. Visit my blog to see a number of posts that outline why the McCain/Palin ticket is going to lose this election.
October 20th, 2008 at 10:14 am
Yeah, well, Obama was an admitted drug user as well, have you ever heard him go into any detail about that? Has he been asked the hard questions? Hell no!
It’s really simple, you can point out all you want about people who are not even running for President that you feel makes your case.
Obama’s past is so mingled with so many “hate” mongers
it’s just ridiculous that is a fact
October 20th, 2008 at 10:17 am
CarolFlowery -
OH NOES! OBAMA HAS A WELL-PLANNED CAMPAIGN!
shouldn’t you find it reassuring that one of the candidates actually has some intelligence and management skills? Since when is not being an idiot when it comes to strategy a bad thing? Especially when Obama is being strategic AND taking the high road and staying out of the gutter.
Sarah Palin is uniquely unqualified. Take your head of the rovian sand.
October 20th, 2008 at 10:19 am
Is a man’s word no longer accepted as “His Word”….I guess NOT to some Republicans who are losing this race.
I respect General Powell and others who have consdiered thier options and mave made a choice in voting for OBAMA-BIDEN!
Let’s unite - not divide our country!
Didn’t anyone listen and watch Tom Brokaw when he asked Powell the hard questions? Times change, and so do we. Everyone is changing everyday, or else you are as stale a a loaf of bread. Get with it, people! History is in the making and our nation is ready for an OBAMA-BIDEN presidency!
VOTE OBAMA-BIDEN on Nov. 4th! Don’t be afraid to accept CHANGE…

reminder - GWbush admitted to using cocaine at camp david when his dad was president. americans voted for him. clearly the press just figures we must not care about that kind of stuff.
McCain has absolutely no family values (left a disabled wife after cheating for years) and apparently gave comfort to the enemy in nam. media leaves that alone. liberals don’t make a bid deal out of it, because we want to focus on the issues. Issues matter.

I apologize for my typos above in previous comments. I am so aggravated when I read people challenging a well-respected man’s word !

I want to get one thing straight today. When I first heard
Obama making speeches in the beginning of the primaries, I thought wow, now that’s a great speaker. You know what, that is all he is to me to this very day. I dont give to flying doves if he’s black, he is half white as he reminds us all the time, but he never wrote a book about that side did he?
Barak Obama brought his past associations with him, we didnt bring them to him. If any of you out there are parents, please tell me it doesnt matter to you who your
children hang out with. Please tell me you if you dont get
leary of some of your children’s friends!
If John McCain had sat in a church with those hateful remarks about this country being made, he wouldnt even be in this election. Barak left the church, but he did not leave the man that still to this day has refused to retire even after saying he was going to. While these folks make fun of JOhn and Cindy’s 7 homes, they too live in million dollar homes! Who’s lying to whom! Who is lying to America?
October 20th, 2008 at 10:24 am
Correct me if I am wrong, BUT, McCain has had no Leadership starting with his marriages, and his love for “younger” companions! His party should NEVER have elected him to represent them in this election! Romney and Huckabee were 100% better choices. I am a Republican! I am voting Barack OBAMA!
October 20th, 2008 at 10:26 am
George Bush admitted to being an alcoholic and had used cocaine. Bill Clinton admitted to “not inhaling” marijuana. John McCain, who is probably suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, drinks alcohol and is married to a millionairess who owns a beer distributorship. His backyard at his Arizona estate has two outdoor bars. JFK drank booze and was addicted to a long list of pain medications. Let’s not be too conveniently one-eyed about the humanity of our politicians and use their humanness to attack them just because we don’t like their policies or the color of their skin. And, when we accuse them of being around “hate mongers”, lets list those mongers and when the alleged association took place. You should remember that John McCain is still close friends with G. Gordon Liddy, and he was an admirer of convicted felon Charles Keating. People in power don’t live in bubbles, perfectly insulated from those who want influence in government. What you have to pay attention to is what they say and do, rather than whom they may have met briefly a dozen or more years ago.
October 20th, 2008 at 10:29 am
Pat, what a silly comment.
Collin Powell stated very clearly why he supported Sen. Obama and race is not a factor. I doubt Colin Powell would endorse Jessie Jackson, Al Sharpton, or others like them. So, I’ll chaulk your comment up as a knee jerk reaction because it’s scaring the heck out of you that an African & White man might become the next President.
October 20th, 2008 at 10:30 am
Steven, I have to respectfully disagree.
Intense dismay at Sarah Palin, the Bush administration, and the McCain campaign does not equate to Obama being “transformational” and thus is not a sufficient cause for an endorsement (though they may well be necessary). I really do believe that Powell sees Obama as someone who can create a postracial politics in America*, and that is linked to their shared racial experiences and potential to bridge whites, blacks, and browns. Consider that Powell speaks to Obama’s campaign being “inclusive” in the MTP interview but there’s no evidence that Obama is ideologically inclusive or even culturally inclusive (we shouldn’t forget the “bitter” remarks), instead, Obama is a racially inclusive figure, someone whom, like Powell, can attract admirers of all races .
Powell may couch this in terms of “generational change” as he did on MTP, but, having served with President Clinton, he should know as well as anyone that having a new generation in charge doesn’t guarantee the best policy outcomes. Yet we may see the words “generational” in a different way. Obama is not just a shift to a younger generation of leaders but a shift to a new generation of voters, to an America who could contemplate a black man as president and say yes. In 1996 Powell declined to run for president for fear that America would contemplate a black man and say no. What’s different now isn’t so much the man but the mood of the people, and I could understand why Powell wants to be part of it.
At the end of the day, Obama being not-Bush and not-McCain isn’t enough to support Powell’s choice of rhetoric. Even Obama’s youth can’t explain it all, nor can Obama’s policy vision, which is strong compared to McCain but underwhelming compared to Clinton in 1992. I’ll stick my neck out here and say that Obama’s development into a credible African-American candidate was a sufficient cause for Powell’s endorsement.
* One should note that this meme of “Obama the postracial healer” is at least one year old and common among Obamaphilic conservatives and moderates.

This is an email I received from Frances Rice, Chairman for the Natinal Black Republicans. You should right to them also.
“Thanks for the e-mail. It is a sad day. Please keep in mind that Gen. Powell has spent his entire career in environments where the government provides for your needs — the military and public service jobs. So, he is instinctively a socialist like Obama. Add to that the fact that Gen. Powell spent a lot of time as a Diplomat, and Diplomats believe that “talking” and written agreements are the way to solve problems. It seems that Gen. Powell is no longer focusing on the fact that diplomacy is worthless if not backed up by the credible treat of military force. Additionally, Gen Powell is immersed in the elite liberal media world that is hiding who Obama really is, a far left-wing radical socialist who has not inherent love for this country. I pray that most Americans do see or can be made to see the real Obama before it is too late. I, for one, will do all that I can to help wake America up.
It is interesting how Democrats now love Gen. Powell, but spewed out the most vile, racist attacks on Powell before he endorsed Obama.”
Regards,
Frances Rice

Ok folks, please make a list of all the great accomplishments Obama has made for this country.
Feel free to list as many as you can, by all means.
Just leave John McCain and Sarah Palin out of it, although
while many states are in the red now budget wise, Alaska has a 7 billion dollar surplus.
But, please list Senator Obama’s great accomplishments and how they have helped this country.

Color blindness? Colin is looking to his political future and is just another example of how Obama brings the worst out in Americans.
Watching this election has been a representation of Narcissism completely unchecked. The hundreds of million Obama has spent to buy an election could have helped a lot of Americans in their time of need. The multitude of lies Obama has been caught in, his inability to show his love for this country, ACORN, the missing proof of citizenship, Bill Ayres, the mysterious string of deaths surrounding him, and much more screams this is not someone who is capable focusing on anything other than his obsessive lust for power and person gain.
Obama believes the Constitution as a living document instead of a set of rule Americans have always lived by. His attempts to shut down internet radio stations that speak out against, his intimidation tactics to force networks not to show ads that expose him, and his murder of those who speak out against him is history repeating itself. Hitler, Castro, and now Obama. America is too precious and important to the well being of the world to put it in the hands of a man who lacks any of the honesty, integrity, and leadership we need in the White House. We will not go quietly into Socialism to appease the ego of a maniac. Mr. Obama go home and leave us be, and take the rest of your color blind political liars with you!
October 20th, 2008 at 10:42 am
How in the world can you actually believe that the Powell endorsement was NOT about RACE? You are delusional if you REALLY believe it wasn’t. Don’t be ashamed to say it. I’m not. Truth is the truth. He endorsed obama based solely on the color of his skin! Period.

Barack Obama: graduated top of his class from Columbia and then from Harvard Law, where he soon became an editor and then president of the Harvard Law Review. Then taught Constitutional law at the University of Illinois and became an effective and very popular community organizer. Was selected by the very conservative Annenberg family to lead its foundation in Chicago which was instituted to help kids from low-income families get a decent education. Then he was elected state Senator.
John McCain: graduated 894th in his Naval Academy class of 899 midshipmen. Got into the Academy because his father and grandfather were Admirals. After graduating, he earned a reputation of recklessness as a pilot and lost several aircraft which investigators concluded was due to poor judgment. After being shot down over Hanoi and being held captive for 5 years, he returned home to his wife and family, who had remained loyal all that time. Then he began an affair with a young, pretty heiress, left his wife and was given a high-paying job in public relations by his new wife’s wealthy father. Later, his wife got him to lobby illegally for Charles Keating, a corrupt banker who bought influence in Washington. As a Senator, McCain earned a reputation as an angry, frequently profane man with an uncontrollable temper. Even his closest associates talk openly about this flaw, which suggests that McCain suffers from an anxiety condition known as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. He was an arch-conservative in the Senate until George Bush went after him in the 2000 primaries. From that point forward, he turned “maverick”, more in retribution for what Bush had done to him in 2000. Now, in this election, he seems to have returned to his far right roots.

Obama is still playing the race card and he even has Senator Biden and other doing it.
Obama will lose the presidential race because he has not been properly vetted and his past or last of past history is in question with no answers in sight….
There was not a single believable answer to the Ayers, Acorn, Radicalism, Wright and all the baggage that Obama has trailing him; no they are just headlining the race card.
Most Obama supporters state that they do not think Governor Sarah Palin is not ready to be president if something happens to McCain…
I want someone to answer this question, who and what qualifies Senator Barack Hussein Obama to be president?
Maybe if they can show what qualifies Obama other than that he is black and a novelty, than he would get the support of the American people, until then common sense will prevail and McCain will be the next president…
I love these rants they speak to the Obama situation completely!

obama sat in that church for TWENTY years…yes 20 and listened to his beloved pastor spew hatred towards the USA and WHITES! Judgment? Hmmmmmmm….black liberation theology does NOT include WHITES! Period. Racist? You betcha’ - and to think that he actually compared Wright to his OWN grandmother! obama ONLY denounced him when he knew the American people weren’t going to stand for it. Just like Wright said, “he’ll say or do anything to get elected”
Nuff said.

Carolflowery,
You’re clearly blind to Obama’s accomplishments, which over 50% of Americans seem to have no trouble seeing. I’m not going to play that game with you. Ideology has clearly blinded you.
Reminder, Alaska receives $1.80 in our tax dollars for every $1 alaskans pay in taxes. the state is one giant welfare case living on OUR tax dollars. And Palin accuses obama of being a socialist? despite that alaskans TAKE far more than they contribute in federal tax dollars and earmarks, Palin then doubled the amount that the state of alaska GIVES to its residents (thousands of dollars per person per year). Alaska is a welfare state and Palin only acted to increase that welfare, which coincidentally bought a lot of popularity in her tiny state (smaller population in all of alsaska than in Obama’s senate district).
side note - Palin almost bankrupted wasilla with the sports complex, and DID NOT balance the budget.

Powell’s endorsement of Obama does not verify Obama’s judgement, but rather brings Powell’s judgement into question. Powell says that Obama is ready to lead … WHY? … Regardless of Powell’s last minute endorsement, Obama is still the most liberal senator in congress … who accomplished nothing in his meager 3 years in office, except voting present 160 times, and campaigning for President, as well as associating with anti-American racists and domestic terrorists … and, taking America down the road to socialism. Obama betrayed a friendship of 20 years, for personal ambition. Powell betrayed his friendship with McCain. McCain did not betray his fellow prisoners, even during 5 years of torture. These facts speak volumes about who these men really are, and whether or not we can trust them.

Where did this meme come from that Barack came out of nowhere? Didn’t we just go through an extremely long and arduous primary battle where we had more than enough time to examine him and his past? Didn’t we already look into the silly smears that were said about him long ago, such as when CNN visited the alleged madrassa he attended?
He admittedly hasn’t been on the national stage for as long as someone like John McCain has, but he’s hardly an unknown. This is really just trying to feed into the two nastier campaign pushes that are being used by the other side lately: the unknown other (”who is the REAL Barack Obama?” at best, “terrorist muslim” at worst) and rigging the election (”isn’t it suspicious that he’s come so far so quickly?” Um, no, he had to slug it out through an endless, difficult primary battle.)
As for why his drug use hasn’t come up, it’s because it’s an admitted part of his past fully explained in his books. It’s been dealt with and is old news. This is the same reason why their attempts to bring up McCain and the Keating Five haven’t gained any traction. It’s been admitted, dealt with, and is old news.
As for his accomplishments, off the top of my head I can think of Obama-Coburn, which increased government transparency by putting all spending documentation online (and Tom Coburn is a very conservative Republican for those who say he’s never been bipartisan) and working with Lugar on nuclear nonproliferation. Here’s a list that goes through his other work but keep in mind it’s from two years ago. It also doesn’t get into anything he’s done prior to arriving in the Senate.

for starters, being a US senator is far more impressive than being governor of a state that relies on US tax dollars to survive (alaska takes $1.80 in US federal tax dollars for every $1.00 that it contributes - talk about welfare!). Further, McCain has never been good at anything - he was a lousy student, lousy pilot, lousy father, and even a lousy POW who caved in and confessed to war crimes). I don’t need an exhaustive list - Obama is clearly the best of the three, by far, and that’s enough for me… and the majority of our country. Never forget, you geniuses are in the minority. Also, it’s worth noting that educated people prefer Obama by an astounding margin. Sorry about your gullibility.

This is the mentality of an hateful person. Mcain was A hero,a great man who devoted life to country. I hope you appreciate what sacrifice he has given his country, as any can clearly see. You should put your head back in the hole it came out of.

Limbaugh, Buchanan, et. al. *have* to say it is about race. They have no choice, because the alternative is to admit that the Republican brand is *worse* than dog food. Even the dogs won’t eat it. It *has* to be about race… it *has* to be…

I agree it is disturbing - i think you missed my point. It’s all true, but missing crucial details i.e. I think most men in mccain’s situation would have caved in, and i don’t think he’s any less honoroble for the fact that he did. it would not be right to question his honor based on that. Likewise, it isn’t fair to reduce everything to race as a convenient excuse for people who can’t handle the idea that we live in the 21st century.

Sorry, but being a “great man” or “great woman” doesn’t qualify someone to be president. We also need intellect, leadership, and more.

Carol Flowery and Howard, and all the other nay-sayers who want to tear down a man’s reputation rather than dispute the facts. You keep attacking one person’s fitness to lead a nation based on his lack of experience? But what about McCain’s lack of lack of diligence in the matter of leading our country. He claims to want to put country first but he keeps changing the subjects that do not matter. Plain as day he announced to the public, “if we keep talking about the economy, we’ll loose this election”. Plain as day he announced to the public, “We are going to attack Obama’s character”. I don’t want a man who is going to telegraph all his punches and tell us when he is going to be an asshole and not answer questions and avoid subjects. Does he assume we are all that fucking incompetent that we do not want to hear facts, that we like rhetoric, that we enjoy word-smithing and half truths?
I pick Barack Obama because he has answered the questions. He said he will lower taxes on the middle class which bare the burden of your Neo Conservative mistakes. We the middle class have a plan to bring us out of this mess that the Neo Conservatives pet, the Free “Unregulated” Market has brought fourth.
You claim he has not had any accomplishments when Barack Obama let’s list them…
Barack Obama passed legislation with (R) Senator Jim Talent to give gas stations a tax credit for installing E85 Ethanol Refueling pumps. Which covers 30% of the costs of switching one or more traditional petroleum pumps to E85 which is an 85% ethanol to 15% Gasoline Blend.
Obama admitted to his moral failures of use of cocaine, marjunana and alcohol he admitted to these things as his greatest moral failure. Same moral failure as George W. Bush had that you were so quick to forgive him for.
Obama graduated with a BA from Columbia in ’83 then worked at the Business International Corp and then the New York Public Interest Research Group. After four years in NY Obama moved to Chicago where he was hired as a director of Development Communities Project ( A Church Based community organization originally made up of eight Catholic parishes in Greater Roseland on Chicago’s far south side. He worked there for 3 years. During his career as Director for DCP he grew the staff from one to thirteen and it’s annual budget from 70k a year to 400k a year (there is a candidate that can balance a budget). His accomplishments include helping set up job training programs, college preparatory tutoring programs, and a tenants’ right organization in Altgeld Gardens. During this time he also worked as a consultant and an instructor for the Gamaliel Foundation a community organization institute.
In ’88 he entered Harvard Law School, based on his grades his writing competitions he was selected by the end of his first year in HLS to be an editor of the Harvard Law Review. By ’90 he was elected president of the Law Review, a full-time volunteer position functioning as editor-in-chief and supervising the Law Review’s staff of eighty editors. During his summers at Harvard Law School he would return to Chicago where he would work as a summer associate at the law firms of Sidley & Austin and Hopkins & Sutter. He graduated with his Juris Doctor, a JD at Harvard Law School Magna Cum Laude in ’91.
After Graduation and return to Chicago, his reputation and hard work with the Harvard Law Review got him recruited by the faculty of the University of Chicago Law School. While working at the University of Chicago Law School, he was provided with a fellowship and an office to work on his first book, Dreams from My Father.
In ’92 Obama directed the Illinois, Project Vote, from April to October, a voter-registration drive with 10 staff members and 700 volunteer members. His work and dedication to the program, not to mention his ability to achieve a goal of registering 150,000 unregistered African-Americans in the State of Illinois, led to Crain’s Chicago Business naming him to it’s ’93 list of top 40 under Forty powers to be.
He served from ’93-’02 on the board of directors of the Woods Fund of Chicago and from ’94 - ’02 on the board of directors of the Joyce Foundation, he served on the board of directors of the Chicago Annenberg Challenge from ’95 - ’02 as a founding president and chairman on the board of directors from ’95 - ’99. Some other boards he severed as a director for, The Chicago Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, The Center for Neighborhood Technology, and the Lugenia Burns Hope Center.
In ’96 he was elected Illinois Senate as Senator from Illinois 13th District… Once elected he gained bipartisan support for legislation reforming ethics and health care laws. He sponsored a law increasing tax credits for low income workers, negotiated welfare reform, and promoted increased subsidies for childcare. In ’01 as co-chairman of the bipartisan Joint Committee on Administrative Rules, Obama supported (R) Governor Ryan’s Payday Loan Regulations and Predatory Mortgage Lending Regulations aimed at averting home foreclosures (That is back in ’01 before we even had this mess, back when there was the housing BOOM and everyone was making their Ill decisions to flip houses at their own benefit).
For a man that you claim has done so little, why was he re-elected to the Illinois Senate in ’98 and again in ’02. In ’00 he lost a Democratic primary run for the US House of Representatives to four-term Bobby Rush by a margin of 2-1.
In Jan of ’03 Obama became a chairman of the Illinois Senate Health and Human Services Comittee. He sponsored and led unanimous, bipartisan passage of legislation to monitor racial profiling by requiring police to record the race of drivers they detained and legislation making Illinois the first state to mandate videotaping of homicide interrogations. During ’04 in his general election campaign for US Senate, police representatives credited Obama for his active engagement with police organizations in enacting death penalty reforms.
In mid-’02 Obama began considering his run for the US Senate. He received 52% of the vote in March 2004 Primary emerging 29% ahead of his nearest Democratic Rival.
In ’04 Obama wrote and delivered the keynote address at the 2004 Democratic National Convention in Boston Mass. After describing his maternal grandfather’s experiences as a WW2 veteran and a beneficiary of the New Deal’s FHA and G.I.Bill programs, Obama spoke about changing the US government’s economic and social priorities. He questioned the Bush Administration’s management of the Iraq War and highlighted America’s obligations to it’s soldiers, drawing examples from US History, he then criticized heavily partisan views of the electorate and asked Americans to find unity in diversity, saying, “There is not a liberal America and a conservative America; there should only be the United States of America.”
Obama was sworn in as a senator in Jan of ’05, making him the 5th African American Senator in our US History and the third to have been popularly elected. Obama was labeled “The Most Liberal Senator” by the National Journal based on an assessment of selected votes, not national votes or anything others had any basis to make judgements of his career or decision making. In ’06 he was ranked 10th and by 2008 he ws ranked by Congress.Org the eleventh most powerful Senator in the US.
Obama voted in faor of the Energy Policy Act of 2005 ( a statue that was passed by the US Congress on July 29, 2005 and signed into law by President George Bush on Aug 8 2005. The Act described by proponents as an attempt to combat growing energy problems, changed the energy policy of the US by providing tax incentives and loan guarantees for energy of various types (if that is a bad example of spreading the wealth someone let me know… because our tax dollars go to this and spreading tax dollars is not socialist, socialism is by personal property, your tax dollars are not your personal property, it is your dues for living in this great nation. The main purpose for taxes is revenue, taxes raise money to spend on roads, schools, hospitals, more indirect government functions like market regulation or justice systems; the second is redistribution, normally this means transferring of wealth from the richer to the poorer, but the function is widely accepted in most democracies although the extent to which this should happen has always in our History of Civilizations been controversial; the third is repricing, taxes are levied to address externalities: tobacco is taxed to discourage smoking, implementation of carbon tax and other forms to discourage poor behaviors at the cost of lives; the fourth is representation; the American revolutionary slogan “No Taxation without Representation” implied rulers tax citizens, and citizens demand accountability from their rulers as the other part of this bargain, this generates the greatest degree of accountability and better governance… So someone explain how we have lost our accountability with our own government who seems to have the taxes for companies in better care then our own citizens)
Obama cosponsored the Secure America and Orderly Immigration Act ( an immigration reform bill introduced to the Senate, the first of it’s kind since the early 2000s in incorporating legalization, guest worker programs, and boarder enforcement components. The bill became a landmark legislation that was often referenced by most parties, this bill led to the Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act of 2006 & 2007)
Obama also introduced the Coburn-Obama Transparency Act which authorized the establishment of USAspending.gov, a web search engine on federal spending. On June 3, 2008 Sen. Obama along with Senators Thomas Carper, Tom Coburn and JOHN MCCAIN, introduced follow-up legislation: Strengthening Transparency and Accountability in Federal Spending Act of 2008: This is something McCain has failed to address to the pubic when saying that Obama doesn’t care about how our Goverment Spends our money…. McCAIN YOU NAUGHTY LIAR OR HALF-TRUTH OMITTER … YOU, Didn’t your mother ever teach you not to take all the credit for yourself… this also proves that OBAMA CAN WORK ACROSS PARTY LINES AS WELL AND IS A MAVERICK OF THE DEMOCRATS SINCE HE LIKES WORKING WITH REPUBLICANS SUCH AS MCCAIN.
Obama sponsored legislation requiring nuclear plant owners to notify state and local authorities of radioactive leaks.
In Dec of ’06 Bush signed into law the Democratic Republic of the Congo Relief, Security, and Democracy Promotion Act, marking the first federal legislation to be enacted with Obama as it’s primary sponsor.
Obama and Sen. Feingold introduced a corporate jet provision on the Honest Leadership and Open Government Act, which was signed into law in September of ’07 (a law of the United States federal government that amended parts of the Lobbying Disclosure Act of 95. It strengthens public disclosure requirements concerning lobbying activity and funding, places more restrictions on gifts for members of Congress and their staff, and provides for mandatory disclosure of earmarks in expenditure bills…. Funny does this rebuke all these earmark statements McCain keeps throwing around?)
Obama introduced Deceptive Practices and Voter Intimidation Prevention Act (a bill to criminalize deceptive practices in federal elections… these are such things as placing an over abundance of law enforcement officials in riot gear outside of local voting areas such as large African American voting areas to scare away voters from placing their ballot on election day, or any of the other evil tactics to prevent people from obtaining their basic right as citizens, the right to be heard and their vote.)
Obama sponsored the Iran Sanctions Enabling Act supporting divestment of state pension funds from Iran’s Oil and Gas industry, and co-sponsored legislation to reduce risks of nuclear terrorism. Obama also sponsored a Senate amendment to the State Children’s Health Insurance Program, which provides one year of job protection for family members caring for soilders with combat related injuries.
Obama held assignments on the Senate Committees for Foreign Relations, Environment and Public Works and Veteran’s Affairs through Dec of ’06. In Jan ’07 he left the Environment of Public Works committee and took additional assignments with Health, Education, Labor and Pensions And Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs. He also became Chairman of the Senates subcommittee on European Affairs. As a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Obama has made official trips to Eastern Europe, the Middle East, Central Asia and Africa. He met with Mahmoud Abbas before he became the President of Palestine, and Obama gave a speech at the University of Nairobi condemning the corruption in the Kenyan Government… (That is not only showing international abilities to lead as a president but also showing some massive balls by going into another country and condemning the corruption of that countries government.)
While campaigning for Presidency he has raised $16.4 million during the first half of 2007 in small donations alone, the magnitude of the small donation portion was outstanding from both the absolute and relative perspectives. He set another record in 2008 where his campaign raised $36.8 Million, the most ever raised in one month by a presidential candidate in the Democratic Primaries. In that alone you see that people are willing to give the little they have just too show how much they want change. We need change in this country not a small tweak in something that has proven it’s failure and to stay the course of failure is not only ridiculous, but it is also naive on so many parts of so many people of the Republican Party…. That is why you see Gen. Powell standing behind a Democrat… not because of race, but because he too understands that it is not a small step to the side we need, but a gigantic stomp in the ground to make a statement that this country will change and be lead by a new league of leaders, ones that show genuine care for the people they serve, not the companies that should be serving the citizens and in turn be reaping benefits of their creations and their jobs.
So… Carol, how are those beer goggles you are wearing? Did I help you at all… Do you see that a man that has only been a public servant for such little time has done more than most senators do in 10 to 20 years. He has served our country with great honor. He looks out for people who do not get the fair share or the fair chances.
You claim that it is socialist to pay taxes? Basically that is what you are saying… Socialism is a theory of social organization advocating state or collective owner ship of property and the distribution of goods and the creation of an egalitarian society. Do you have your ideas of Socialism and Communism confused? Are you one of those witch hunters that love to scream out she is a witch a witch? When there was no witch-craft involved? Do you like to place blame when the ones you are blaming risk everything for something they are not doing?
You are screaming Socialist when you should be afraid of Communism. You see… Even Karl Marx posited that socialism would be achieved via class struggle and a proletarian revolution… a stage that represents the transitional stage between capitalism and communism. Do you think Socialism is Communism?
All socialists believe is that capitalism unfairly concentrates power and wealth among a small segment of the society and that inturn controls capital, and creates UNEQUALITY IN SOCIETY….
For us to shout we are proud to be Americans because of our Equality… I don’t see equality of men and women under a Capitalist Society, when Capitalism thrives even in the death and losses of the people it is governing.
What is wrong with wealth and power distributed equally, if not equally, how about fairly… how about everyone has the opportunity to succeed, that is socialist I guess? What is wrong with me wanting to have more rights then a company pulling in all the money that the greedy Capitalists are so hungry for? Since I only pull in 40k a year I am nothing but bread crumbs to them and they toss me aside… I am last on their list of ones to look out for…. So when I pay taxes as an American I demand Accountability for my Health, My Education, My Security… NO TAXATION WITH OUT REPRESENTATION!!!!
How are we being treated fairly in a Capitalist society when we are being cast aside as lepers while benefits are being taken from us so that companies that produce profits for the corrupt government get all the attention… why should I, a person who works for these companies, the backbone to their labor have to struggle to make not just ends meet, but have to make hard decisions wether or not to pay my college loans or eat for the month… Where is my accountability… Where are my tax breaks to help me be able to pay for goods these corporations are creating? You see… we are failing as an economy because the middle class that rows the boat can’t row the boat any longer… because you are taking away our health care to increase profits… you are taking away education and making it unaffordable so that less people have the opportunity to have the jobs you control… you make it nearly impossible to work the totem pole from the bottom, when we have to change jobs every 3 years just to find an increase of salary but at the same level of experience… Where is my JUSTICE? Who is looking out for ME? NOT MCCAIN HE IS LOOKING OUT FOR PROFITS AND MARGINS AND TAX BREAKS FOR THE WEALTHY CONTROLLING CLASS OF THE NEO-CAPITALIST SOCIETY CREATED BY BUSH.
Jobs have been striped from us and sent over seas by these capitalists… Wages have been frozen by the greedy profit hungry capitalists… You claim Socialism is so Evil where JESUS HIMSELF was a socialist, he wanted equality and freedom for all God’s Children, yet you are trying to make religion and rights of being American some kind of secret club… How dare you or any other republican dare denounce by ability to enter the kingdom of heaven because of my liberal views….. Jesus had liberal views based on the conservative views back then, back then women were not equals, he wanted all God’s children to be equal… He even found the rich and greedy detestable. Jesus himself threw the congregators selling their goods in the church out of God’s house, because people lost sight of the pureness of God and Christianity and only started worshiping the coin and gold and profits….
So for all these Americans more so REPUBLICANS that love to shout out how much God loves them and God protects them… They sure do have a wild ride in store for them when they are judged for the mistreatment of their fellow brothers, by keeping them from being able to work, to be modern slaves of labor for pennies that do not even pay the house bills let alone the rent or food for their children…. Jesus detested the rich and the powerful for their fat cat life styles while people suffered, what makes you think God won’t pass judgement on the people today for the hundreds upon millions of lives they have ruined with their greed.
Do you really think that the bible refers to a Six Headed Monster as the beast? Come on…. NO… That six Headed beast that bears the mark of 666 is not going to be GODZILLA, It’s not a fairy tale, it’s going to be corporations… wait and see…. you are feeding it with your greed. You are living the lavish life styles and flying in private planes while not giving back 20% to your fellow brother. Couldn’t that 20% you should be giving, be in taxes that are redistributed to fix our pipes, fix our roads, give education to the children of our future? What is so damn wrong with looking at WE versus looking only at ME… God did not sit out there are promote ME for all you radical Republican bible thumpers out there.
If god promoted fairness amongst your brothers and sisters, then why do you say that our country is God’s Country… we are not fair to everyone here. We still have bigotry, shouts of Kill Him from the Republican Rallies… and for McCain to compare people screaming Old Fart and Retire in any shape or form as equal to Kill Him and the Slurs of Arab? That is detestable as well. It is despicable that we have people living in our society that can’t tell the difference between an Arab and a Terrorist… I love that you coined the word Arab as well… do you know that Arab just means people of the Arabian Peninsula, did you know that includes Iraq, ISRAEL, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Palestinian Territories, Qatar, Saudia Arabia, Syria, Jordan, The United Arab Emirates, and Yemen… Did you know that Jesus was Jewish… So for you to claim that Arab as a Slur, then you claim ISRAEL under that slur and in turn you are calling Jesus a Terrorist. So watch what you fucking say when you fucking low life bigots bunch up a group of people under one general word.
I am sickened that it took a race for the white house between a half white half black senator and a old white guy to bring out the long living life of Bigotry and Racism in this country. I completely agree with what was said before as well, I do not want to hear you bring up that Gen. Powell decided this upon race and he is voting because of race, because how many white people are voting for McCain because he is white, how many women will be voting for a lack-luster, inexperienced VP Candidate, Sarah Palin because she is a woman….
Anyway, Socialism is not a discrete philosophy of fixed doctrine and program; its branches advocate a degree of social interventionism (voting) and economic rationalization… Obama is not some radical socialist like you claim him to be, if you want to label him a socialist at the minimum he is requiring a state control of capital within a frame work of a market economy. How is that terrible? How is it terrible to rework the frame work of who should be paying more taxes and less taxes? There is nothing wrong with that? You have been paying low taxes for 8 years, you have had your fair turn… we had our fair turn with Clinton 8 years before that… Now give it back like grown ups should and let us dig us out of this Capitalistic Shit Hole You created.
How is making sure that everyone get’s health benefits, everyone has the ability to be educated, that everyone is protected by law enforcement, that we have firemen in every district, that we have ample public services to lessen the burden of taking out trash or recycling from day to day… You all complain about so much, you want to live an easy life style where you are not held accountable for anything…. ( EXAMPLE… You complain about taking out the trash to your fucking side walk… why would you want to drive it out to a dump?… You want to privatize sanitation? You want to increase what it would cost for people to pick up your trash? Where people will the people be that wipe your ass and feed you… we are not your servants, I am not your slave labor, pay me my fair share, give me my benefits I deserve as being an American with the Taxes I pay for and I demand the accountability of my government to provide….
But what makes me laugh is that you won’t pay your fair share of taxes but expect all the benefits… Why should I pay more taxes to get the same kind of equal treatment? If anything we should all pay a flat percentage based on income… the more money you make the higher of the percentage you go up…. It would be a fair system if you leave it at that… So then you will have more small businesses and people in the middle class investing more of their hard earned money into small companies that will flourish… I don’t see how paying more in taxes is going to hurt a 250k business, if they budget their money and invest in their employees they will see more hard working employees, better health and better education to increase the profits… and they will see more people buying their goods because the middle class will finally have money to spend on goods rather than debt…
Why have we gone from a county that innovated the automotive industry and other companies, to now being a country that only pushes around debt and numbers… how is debt and numbers keeping cash and revenue in this country? It only goes to businesses and not back to the people who need it…
Enough is Enough….
I have disputed all of your comments… I have made my strong points based on strong facts…. So without trying to scare me into a vote, with out shoveling back tons of rhetoric and numbers you are learning from Republican Biased Media because you won’t listen to BBC or once and a while listen to what the Liberals have to say…. Try and argue my points with rationale and facts, not half-truths and spin room logic.

Earlier this year, Senator Lieberman went against his proclaimed party when he chose to endorse Senator McCain for President. Using Limbaugh Logic, can we fairly conclude that Senator Lieberman is endorsing Senator McCain based on race, or should we accept, at face value, that Senator Lieberman has made his choice for the reasons that he has expressed?
October 20th, 2008 at 6:16 pm
Right on Mr. G Man!!!
Those who glorify ignorance, narrow mindedness, backwards thinking, shady values, misinformation, fear-mongering shoudl be ashamed of themselves1 What kind of role models are you to your children, friends, and the world. We should glorify hard work, speaking the truth despite going against popular opinion, rising above expectations through personal struggle, resilence, focus, discipline, and judgement. Obama is a role model, someone I can poitn to my son and daughter and say, “here, look, this is what you can become when you grow up”.

Those who choose to read race into Gen. Powell’s endorsement of Sen. Obama want race to be an issue. Of all assessments made, I find Gen. Powell’s to be very logical and made in the interest of America. He made several great comparison points about the two candidates, but very important to me is the aspect of how we look to the world with all this infighting and really flat out stupid attempts to covertly link Sen. Obama to terrorist connections, implying he is a Muslim when he is a Christian. As Gen. Powell said, if he were a Muslim, so what? There are many great Americans who happen to be Muslims. What is true is that the Republican campaign stated that they would step up attacks on Sen. Obabma rather than talk about the issues — like the economic crisis — that are in the interest of the American people, otherwise they “would lose.” That, to me, is far more telling than these meaningless attacks on Sen. Obama. This divides us when they should be uniting us.

It truly disturbs me that so many people like Carolflowery have been completely taken in by the rhetoric of the far right.
Elections should not be about what we think of as character flaws. Just about every president in history has had some vice or other, and the country hasn’t fallen apart yet. Even the commander in chief is human.
Even so, I love the sheer ignorance with which so many of these brainwashed radical right wingnuts completely ignore the numerous severe character flaws and historically immoral behaviour of McCain, and yet latch onto what they see as the questionable character of Obama. What a pathetic, hypocritical double standard these people espouse.
Carolflowry even goes so far as to condemn Obama for his “immorality,” but demands that others refrain from attacking McCain in the same way.
Personally, I disdain character attacks on either side, and don’t think they should play any role in the decision of rational, informed voters.
But I’m often easily baited, so let’s play the character game:
Carolflowery, if you can rationally explain to me why Obama being a member of Wright’s church is a legitimate reason to question his principles, but McCain’s alcoholism, adultery, corruption, and poor family values is NOT a legitimate cause for concern about HIS principles, I will immediately change my vote and support McCain.
But something tells me you can’t explain it (at least not rationally), because, simply put, your argument makes NO SENSE.
You wanted someone to list Obama’s accomplishments. This was done repeatedly despite your insistence that it was not. Now I’d like YOU to list John McCain’s accomplishments. Can you do that? I suspect you care more about villifying Obama than you do about heroizing McCain. Those who seek to heroize McCain seem to be able to come up with only one item: his military service. Now, I don’t impugn the man on these grounds. It takes great courage to serve one’s country in wartime. However, what is often not mentioned is that after his return from Vietnam, McCain spent several years in the Navy trying to establish a carreer for himself, and ended up leaving. He continuously received poor physical evaluations and poor performance reviews, and was never given any major responsibility. So he got his mistress’ father to help jump-start his career in politics.
So essentially, the list of “accomplishments” of both candidates ends up boiling down to this: Obama- successful lawyer and professor, U.S Senator. McCain- naval flight service, unsuccessful naval career, U.S Senator.
There really is no difference in the magnitude of their accomplishments, unless having been held prisoner for 5 years makes McCain inherently more qualified to serve as President.
And one last point: Palin is NOT more qualified and experienced than Obama. I can’t even begin to tell you how ridiculous and ignorant that assertion is.
Let’s compare:
Obama has been a Senator since 1996 (1996-2004 Illinois Sate Senate, 2005-present U.S Senate). In 1996 he was 35 years old. His senatorial disrict had a population of roughly 160000, and had been a lawyer and professor before his career in politics.
Sarah Palin became the mayor of Wasilla, a town of 6000, in 1996. She was 32 years old, and had previously been a sports reporter, and had helped out with her husband’s commerical fishing business. She became the governor of Alaska in 2006.
And yet, you claim that Obama “came out of nowhere??” That’s the silliest thing I’ve heard in a long time. He’s actually been in a federal political office two years LONGER than Palin, so please, if you’re going to accuse candidates of “coming out of nowhere,” Sarah Palin is the most egregious offender.
In sum, everything you have posted on this board smacks of ignorance and lack of thought. It is unfortunate that you do not have the education or willpower to resist the trumped-up rhetoric of the radical right.

GO MATT!!!
I ALSO FIND IT INTERESTING THAT THOSE WHO CLAIM THAT POWELL SUPPORTED OBAMA BECAUSE OF HIS RACE DON’T REALIZE THAT SIMPLY BY MAKING THAT COMMENT THEY REVEAL THEIR OWN RACISM. WHY? BECAUSE OBAMA IS NOT BLACK, HE IS WHITE! HE IS NOT WHITE HE IS BLACK! HE IS EQUALLY WHITE AS HE IS BLACK!! IF YOU CHOOSE TO SEE HIM AS BLACK, THAT SAYS SOMETHING ABOUT YOU AND YOUR FEARS AND YOUR SELECTIVE PERCEPTION!!
SO, TO ALL THOSE LOST SOULS LIKE CAROLFLOWERY, HERE IS WHAT I SAY: LET GO OF THE FEAR, AND THE HATE, AND TAKE OFF THOSE RACIST SHADES!! JOIN THE REST OF THE WORLD!THE WORLD HAS EVOLVED SINCE YOU LAST PICKED UP A BOOK OR A NEWSPAPER AND OPENED YOUR MIND TO OTHERS!

Hey TXgypsy — I would say to Frances Rice: Wars cost money. Look at the two we’re in along with a tanking market. Guess you want to go in with guns blazin’, right? You ever been shot at? Ever seen and heard tracers zipping past your head? If not, my guess is you’d be the first one running in the other direction. Who are you to question Gen. Colin Powell?
Hey, OMGIAMGOINGNUTS …. based on your comment, you’re there! Change it to OMGIAMNUTS!!!
To TerryDo–PumaPac-40+ — You’re racists. Try being Americans.
Hey G Man — you left out “lousy husband”. What real man who has a real devoted wife who waited for years for him to be released only for him to turn around, after she had a terrible accident that left her injured, and cheat on her and leave her for a younger, richer woman. And his only reply about it was, “I take full responsibility for my actions.” Coward.
Hey Pat — someone should plop you in a time machine and zap you back to the 1930’s South so you’ll feel comfortable with your racist views. This is 2008 America where we’re trying to put that crap aside, OK?
October 20th, 2008 at 6:58 pm
Hey carolflowery — Let me guess. You’re voting for McCain because of Sarah Palin and your need to have a woman break the glass ceiling, right? Palin is your motivating factor, right? Well, you’re asleep. Should McCain die or become unable to fulfill his duties — as if he could in the first place — do you think she commands the presence required on the world stage? Or has the need for gender promotion left you completely devoid of anything in the way of reason? In that event, would it be possible for other evil world forces to view her as weak and want to exploit that, or do you think they’ll give her a pass because she is a woman? Is it possible that we’ll sink even further in world standing because the global opinion would be something like, “Well they elected a complete idiot in 2000, relected him in 2004, and now they’re hypnotized by a small-town mayor, 1.5 year governor, who made a national joke of herself BEFORE being elected, and they elected her anyway?” Find a bag of breaks, and give me the biggest one you can find.

I would say that I am appalled by the racist and ignorant comments made here, but that is not true anymore. On a daily basis, I hear many of the same and worse comments made about Barack Obama. I will not repeat Matt and Truth&Lights rebuttals. They both spoke very eloquently in defending Senator Obama.
I also agree wholeheartedly in regards to Sarah Palin. Not only is she not experienced to lead this nation, she could single-handedly set back women’s rights about 100 years or so. Any woman who could vote for her just because she is female does not understand the ramifications of this election. Those are not my only reasons for not liking Sarah, however. She is scarier than Dick Cheney. When she said in the debate that she wanted to expand the powers of the VP, the whole country should have had a heart attack!!!!!!!! And don’t get me started on her husband or their family “values”.(Can you say Alaskan Independence Party?)
This country is in desperate need of someone who can put an end to all the divisiveness. I know in my heart that this man is Barack Obama. And I also know that on November 4th I,as a white middle-class woman, will help make history in electing the first African-American president in this great country’s history.

Hello, I voted for W once and I voted for Clinton too. I’m a middle aged white woman. I voted Democratic already because the Republicans have strayed very far from the party of Lincoln. I am ashamed that they have trashed the Constitution, violated the gosh darn GENEVA conventions and in general, acted more like the Russia of the 1950’s than the USA of the 21st century. Who decided this was my America the Beautiful??? I like McCain, but I won’t tolerate the Neo Cons one second more. They have a failure of vision and a lack of appreciation for the lessons of history. We have many complex problems to solve, I don’t want narrow minded, ideologically rigid people who don’t know the definition of the term ’socialist’ making those important decisions. Sorry, hit the bricks guys, the Mineral Management Services party has been canceled.

Indeed.
All of the racism in this campaign is against Senator Obama. To claim that any racism favors Obama is itself racist.
Meh. I’ve gotta go take a shower before I go to bed now.

On Powell’s endorsement, McCain countered by saying that he had four of the former Republican Secretary of states. The question is the enthusiasm behind the endorsements. The others who have supposed to have endorsed McCain seems half-
hearted compared to Powell. There lies the point.

Phil,
Are you honestly “enthused” about Powell’s endorsement? What I’ve seen on the news it seems that the word you chose doesn’t come into play here. (on every channel) I hear that they WONDER why he did it. It does make ya’ wonder doesn’t it? Sure does me. However being a realist I can see the reason. Powell is black and so is obama. Point!

On your rookie list…..i find it a joke~! and naive at best. I am a Christian and I am offended by your listing
Jesus Christ in the middle of your examples. They were
born for a purpose, true enough….but Jesus Christ was born as God’s son. While I admire all the folks on your list, I do not worship them as my loving and forgiving Savior. No where in the Bible does it say there will be other men to worship. Quite the opposite as a matter of fact. To me, it’s demeaning Jesus’ name to even include
him in this list.

I could do the same for JOhn McCain and Palin, but I will spare you and the reading audience. JOhn McCain has been perfectly clear on his stance on all issues. Raising taxes on anyone at this time would be pure suicide to our economy. The repubs and dems got us into this mess with the congress having even a lower approval rating than the lame duck President.
I know how Obama got to be a Senator in Illonois, it wasnt pretty. Ive read all about the GRANTS he won and how he dispersed them to projects that never accomplished anything but to give a few high paying jobs in the name of helping the poor. THe poor were never helped, the slums, the supposedly garden that never was, etc etc etc

No, I was going to vote for John McCain the day he won the Republican vote. He has reached across the aisle too many times, it is documented. It is quite apparent that many dems reached across the aisle when Bush and Powell presented us the idea of invading Iraq. I could run down a list of presidents in the past who went into coutries that had done nothing to us as well, but you must admit, maybe just maybe some people in Iraq will experience the same freedoms you have in this country. What a concept. I believe Sarah Palin is a strong person, not a strong woman.
If she were a man, this hogwash that has been thrown at her would not have been so horrendous. Powell should have at least sat down with her one time before he made his judgment call about her. He did with Obama, why not Sarah Palin. He obviously based his decision on the biased media
like so many others.

A marginal increase on the top 5% is not an issue, and if anything we need it. But then again, I wouldn’t expect you to understand the effect of deficits on the US dollar and what that means to the economy. trust me when i tell you that you have no grasp of what you are talking about and shouldn’t listen to someone who got a newscaster degree in 6 years after attending 5 schools.

Top officials in Iran are proposing a preemptive strike against Israel to avoid an assault on its nuclear reactors, Israel’s Haaretz newspaper reported Wednesday.
Senior Tehran official Dr. Seyed G. Safavi said at a recent briefing in London that the proposal followed threats by Israeli authorities, but a possible preemptive strike against Israel has not yet been incorporated into Iranian policy.
Israeli Transportation Minister Shaul Mofaz said in June that Israel would be forced to strike Iran’s nuclear reactor if Tehran continues to pursue its controversial uranium enrichment program, Haaretz reported.
Safavi told the paper that Tehran recently drafted a new policy for responding to an Israeli or American attack on its nuke facilities. While the country previously called for attacks against Israel and American interests in the Middle East and beyond, the new policy is to target Israel alone.
In addition, Safavi said that Iran’s elite Revolutionary Guards would respond to a U.S. attack on Iranian soil by attacking Israel, which they believe would be a part of any American military action.
The U.N. Security Council passed a dual-track resolution last month in a slow-moving pressure campaign to persuade Iran to give up objectionable parts of its nuclear program. It calls for offering Iran incentives to stop enriching uranium but imposing sanctions if Tehran refuses, which it has thus far done, The Associated Press reported.

Hey OMG - Said nothing about Obama being middle class. I said he would CARE more for middle class Americans than old 7-house McCain and his trophy wife he cheated on his ex-wife with after she waited years for him to be released. I fail to see the big tax argument here:
Obama - if you make more than $250,000 per year, you’ll have a tax increase. Otherwise, if you make a little less, you’ll either see no change. If you’re making a far lesser
amount, you’ll get a tax cut.
McCain - If you’re rich, you’ll get a tax break. Otherwise, you get nothing.
What, are you like a top executive and rich. Is that why yo’re so hot on McPain?

SPEAKING of idiots? It was you “truth and whatever” that thought I was a racist because I believe Powell endorsed obama because he’s black. So?
October 23rd, 2008 at 10:31 am
Hey OMG: I didn’t say you were racist. I just asked if you were white, which lends understanding as to why you’d think Powell’s decision was based on race. The fact that you have a bi-racial child has nothing to do with it. The reason I said “Hmmmmmmm” was because I don’t think you’re able to believe Colin Powell’s very logical reasons for backing Obama over McCain. I believe you have a built-in skepticism that overrides your ability to believe not so much the things Powell said but that Powell was actually sincere. I wonder if you really objectively listened and analyzed his points from his point of view. For example:
- His belief that the Palin choice as VP — after one meeting with her — showed bad judgment by McCain. And his feeling that she isn’t ready for that job or the job of President should something happen to McCain. Well, many others in the Republican party feel the same way, which is why you don’t see vary many of them out campaigning for McCain. They’re distancing themselves for their own political future. So, this is not a “black-for-black” viewpoint.
- His embarrassment of his own party’s approach to this campaign, which is nothing more that stirring up fear and dividing us rather than uniting us with all these attack ads and stirring up hatred, trying to say in an offhanded way that Sen. Obama is a terrorist because of his color, his middle name, and flat out lying about his religion, saying he’s a Muslim. Again, many others in the Republican party feel the same way, and again, this is not a “black-for-black” viewpoint.
- His belief that McCain has been erratic and angry while Obama has been calm and cool under fire, the latter of which are traits that are crucial in dealing with other world leaders. Remember, after years in the military, reaching the rank of general, serving as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and Sec. of State, Mr. Powell has sat in many rooms with our President and other world leaders in various meetings and negotiations. He has had experiences you, I, most others including TV news journalists, governors, and senators haven’t had, which makes him very well equipped to assess whether or not a candidate brings to the table the talent and skills required within our country and on the world stage.
I could go on, but these are just a few areas that have to be considered in evaluating why General Powell endorsed Sen. Obama and not just the shallow and one-dimensional conclusion that Obama was endorsed just because he is black. That’s absurd.
October 23rd, 2008 at 5:23 pm

By the way,Truth&Light, “homeboy” is slang for friend; usually close friend. To my recollection, this word lost its racial roots and meaning at least 10 years ago in the real USA.
Many individuals use the word, “homeboy”, “homegirl” or the gender-neutral terms, “homey” or “homies” as a synonym for close friend.
