For those interested in local coverage of Ike’s march across the Lone Star State, check out the DMN‘s WEATHER Blog.

Also, for a little pre-Ike/preparation coverage, cruise over to Polimom’s place (she lives in Katy, TX, a suburb of Houston). I especially found her photos from Friday to be quite interesting.

I’m interested to see if Texas handles this mess any better or worse than Louisiana handled Katrina. It’s not as potent a storm but it is very big, and will cause widespread damage.

From what I understand there were close to 100,000 who did not heed the evacuation order (DUMB, DUMB, DUMB!)

This means there will be a lot of search and rescue work to do. There will probably also be a lot more loss of life than there had to be.

I’m currently taking a course on the biology of sharks and rays, and you know, bullshark pups, who spend their first couple of years in the mangrove swamps on the gulf coast, were observed (via radio tagging) leaving the coastal areas for the safety of deep water in advance of Hurricane Katrina. Every single shark left the area in advance of the storm, and returned alive when it was over. We don’t know for sure how they knew it was coming (perhaps changes in atmospheric pressure and resultant changes in water pressure) but they did, and they got the heck out of its way.

Why is it that an animal with a brain the size of a walnut can avoid a hurricane but a person with a brain the size of a cantaloupe can’t?

More local: Para Justicia y Libertad‘s blogger XicanoPwr has some video from the Houston Chronicle.

      His personal coverage is here.
