Phil Klinkner notes that in a new poll
Only 29 percent of voters think she is ready to be president.
He further notes that a similar poll in 1988 40% thought that Quayle was ready.
Beyond that, that 29% number is about the same as President Bush’s approval rating, meaning that Palin is clearly not exciting much more than the true base.

I’d be hesitant to compare the 29% of Palin to the 40% of Quayle.
– Sixteen years is a lifetime in politics.
– Poll was done by different organization, using different methodologies in a very different media world. That in itself could account for the entire 11 point differential.
A better comparison is that 39% think Biden is ready (same organization polling on the Biden announcement) compared to 29% for Palin. The poll also say that she’s viewed positively by 53% of voters while Biden was viewed positively by 43% of voters.

I will admit that comparing polls over that much time is problematic for a lot reasons (including the ones you note).
Still, given the buzz about Palin, the 29% number is telling about how it is that is really excited, and the extent of said excitement.

If Palin needed to excite anyone except the base, McCain is all ready in big trouble.

I think a poll on this question will be more accurate after we all have more chances to see how she performs on the campaign trail. Knee jerk reactions against her at this juncture scream intellectual immaturity.

As pointed out by Rasmussen, Biden’s numbers have been going up since his announcement as VP, up 10% by the end of the convention. (Other polls show higher numbers for both.) It will be interesting how much Palin can raise her numbers this week.
