Ok, so on Monday it was ridiculous to accuse McCain on cheating at the Saddleback Church forum because he was a POW. Now, it is silly to bring up how many houses he has because (and whether he can remember the number), well, he was a POW.
Via The Trail (McCain Spokesman’s Retort: Obama Lives in “a Frickin’ Mansion”) McCain spokesman Brian Rogers:
“This is a guy who lived in one house for five and a half years — in prison,” referring to the prisoner of war camp that McCain was in during the Vietnam War.
Really, we are in the realm of self-parody at this point. That McCain was a POW is not an answer to all questions or charges.

I think Andrew Sullivan got it right on a post today: McCain is “pulling a Giuliani.”
Q. “Why does the Senator think that Iraq has a border with Afghanistan?”
A. “Some may try to score cheap political points about geography, but McCain knows the geography of the world pretty well. This is a guy who spent five and a half years in a geography known as prison.”

The idea is that Obama’s saying since McCain’s wife is rich McCain must not know what it’s like to struggle. And McCain’s answering that he learned a little about struggling while he was a POW.
Is it a good comeback? No. But the original charge is also a non-sequitur.

I don’t see why anyone’s houses (McCain or Obama) should be relevant in the first place.
I mean, seriously. WHO CARES what they live in? Do we really think that anyone vying for the Oval Office is going to be living in a bungalo? Are we to believe that humble living conditions equate to fitness for the presidency? If so then the guy I saw sleeping in a box in Atlanta last week should be on the ballot.
I hate this part of the election cycle, when the conversation turns into a bunch of irrelevant innuendo and insinuation about the candidates “in-touchness”. SHOW ME THE SUBSTANCE IN THIS BATTLE.
I don’t think anyone should care about their houses except their real estate agents.
