Via the AP: Toby Keith praises Obama.
Hmm. Didn’t Keith get into a direct fight with the Dixie Chicks over support for Bush specifically?
And yes, the views of a lone country singer don’t amount to a hill of beans in this crazy, mixed up world. Still, it is at least vaguely interesting that a pop culture figure who was rather clearly pro-Bush policies, and whose constituency is far more likely to be of that position than not, would so publicly support any Democrat, Obama or otherwise, in a race against McCain. At a minimum he must think that such a stance will not affect his record sales or popularity with his fans, which is, in and of itself, interesting–especially when one recalls the backlash against the aforementioned Dixie Chicks when they told an audience in the UK that they were ashamed to be from the same state as Bush (or something to that effect).

My oh my, a “pop culture” figure I have never heard of.

It’s been a while back, but I read an interview with Mr. Keith in a music magazine a few years ago and he said that he has always considered himself a Democrat and that he played at the GOP convention in 2004 because he was asked to. Don’t know, but that’s what he says. In light of that, his “quasi-endorsement” is not so surprising. I mean he hasn’t written a song for Obama like Merle Haggard did for Hillary.
