Via the LAT, we find that Musharraf pledges January elections:
Raising the prospect of an election campaign carried out under de facto martial law, President Pervez Musharraf said Sunday that balloting for a new parliament would take place in early January, but set no date for lifting his emergency decree.
That keeps the elections on schedule.
Of course, nothing says “free elections” like “martial law” and “emergency decree.”
Meanwhile, via the BBC, we find the Bhutto is set to participate in a march and has broken-off talks with Musharraf: Bhutto ‘to go ahead’ with march
Pakistani opposition leader Benazir Bhutto says she will go ahead with a march from Lahore to the capital, Islamabad, despite security risks.
The march is part of her campaign against President Pervez Musharraf’s imposition of emergency rule.
Ms Bhutto also says she has ruled out holding more talks with Gen Musharraf.
The story also notes the following, which is at the heart of the current set of actions, since the previous (and currently jailed) Chief Justice appeared poised to lead the Court into a decision that would have invalidated Musharraf’s candidacy:
He also made it clear that he would not step down as army chief until a new Supreme Court validated his presidency.Sphere: Related Content
