In a post about the Sanchez speech, Morning Coffee chucks me into the left wing:
What Left Wing Bloggers have said… Amazingliy enough they also ignore any criticism of either the Media or of congress as well…Think Progress, Rising Hegemon, The Democratic Daily, Gun Toting Liberal, PoliBlog And of course the Daily Kos
I only find it amusing because I have been labeled by different people at different times as being all over the spectrum, and often get comments that run in various directions. Indeed, just shy of a year ago was called a “right wing nut”.
The interesting thing here is that “left wing” appears to be defined as “not a hardcore supporter of the war” or, at least not jumping on the fact that Sanchez criticized the press and taking that fact as being more significant than anything else in the speech.
At a minimum I guess I need to work on my branding.

I read you all the time and you are not on the left or right. You call them as you see them and you are an academic with more information and more writing than most. Plus, with your understanding of South America you bring a more international flavor to your blog. I think what most people miss is that your international view gives you a unique perspective that does not fit easily into the left-right mix.

What are you getting at with that statement?
When I first started reading Poliblog many long years ago (ok, 3 years ago) I thought you were pretty right wing. Now I think of you as moderate with a conservative tilt. You don’t just toe the party line, you think for yourself.

Take it as a compliment. If they can’t figure out which label to give you, you probably make sense.

I just wrote a post about Michelle Malkin calling John Cole a “leftist”
Glenn Greenwald has written several posts about how “liberal” now means a person who is opposed to the Bush administration’s conception of a unitary executive (and its accompanying wars).
Here’s another post I wrote about this which includes one from Greenwald.

Steven,
Maybe you can put a note at the top of your. You been called a left wing blogger. I’ve been called a Moonbat by Michelle Malkin and a right wing nut at Daily Kos and I’m proud to admit it.
Cheers,
Bill

Personally, I would resent being slanderously associated with any political faction that would endorse opinions of people like me. (to paraphrase Groucho)
But seriously, when the truth cuts like a knife through the sacred veil of self deception, you are going to evoke this sort of acidic, defensive lashing out.
Right before the war started the pro war machine was attacking the patriotism of everyone, even steadfast conservatives, who were asking questions. See David Frum “Unpatriotic Conservatives” and Robert Novak’s response “When the shooting starts.”
Now that the brilliant scheme has turned into a true nightmare they are all the more hostile to questioning.
When the Democrats take power and you start critiquing their excesses - particularly if the power of the executive is not reigned in, full protections for civil liberties are not restored and lobbying reform remains a hollow promise, etc.- well, then it’ll be a different story. Hopefully all will remember when they called you a lefty for the audacity of pointing out this emperor’s lack of clothes. (or sense)

I am just being flippant–i.e., that a lot of blogs clearly thrive on being none as Right or Left, etc.
Ultimately I am quite content if I could be known as one who calls them like he sees them.

Agree with the rest — take it as a compliment. Mr. “phony Soldier”, Rush Limbaugh on the radio the other day: “… independent voters, AHEM… Democrats” —
You, like myself and others here, are guilty of being “far-left loons” because we are independent thinkers and we take each issue on its own. If you don’t read the talking points of both sides, you are a “wingnut” to the left and a “nutroot” to the right.
I kinda like it.

[...] Then, over the weeked I was classified as a “Left Winger Blogger.” [...]
