Via WaPo: Senator Craig Announces Resignation
In a brief public statement in Boise, Craig apologized to supporters, family members and Idaho residents “for what I have caused.” He did not refer to any specific actions or admit wrongdoing.
The resignation is effective on September 30th.
Ultimately I must say that I find him to be worthy of sympathy, insofar as clearly his own tortured internal struggle over his identity eventually destroyed his political career. Further, this situation can’t exactly be healthy for his family and he lives in a small community in a small state. He likely is suffering a great deal at the moment.
That he is guilty of hypocrisy and of extremely bad judgment is clearly the case, however. Whether this warranted resignation is another matter, although were I he, I would probably want to fade from the public eye as well.
For what it is worth, the Craig resignation will likely have only a marginal effect on the GOP’s quest to retake the Senate in ‘08, given that Idaho is a solidly Republican state. (For more on the issue of the GOP’s chances to retake the Senate, go here).
As a side note, this wasn’t exactly the resignation speech that John Cole recommended.

The Republicans will lose Senate seats in 2008. That’s my prediction.
