Via Fosters.com: Lynch supports a regional primary if N.H. is first and retains buffer – Fosters

While discussing progress and roadblocks with other issues, Gov. John Lynch said Wednesday he supports a regional presidential primary system so long as New Hampshire not only retains its first-in-the-nation status but enjoys a buffer before other voting contests.

“I think that’s a good idea … and there ought to be some distance between the two,” he said, adding Iowa should retain its position as the first caucus state.

Egads, what a self-serving assessment. He is basically saying that he doesn’t really care what happens after NH, as long as they get to go first, and by the way, could we have a nice buffer, please, between NH and what the rest of the rabble does? The bone tossed to Iowa is a political necessity, as it is impossible for either Iowa or New Hampshire to argue for retaining their special status without recognizing the “specialness” of their partner in electoral crime.

It makes all the sense in the world for the Governor of New Hampshire to want to retain their status. However, there is also little doubt that New Hampshirites have long ago bought the myth that there is something virtuous in the “retail politics” nature of their primary. Ultimately one can’t fault NH for protecting their own self interest, however. I do fault, however, Republican and Democratic officials who continue to kowtow to the state.
