Via the AP: Romney says straw poll win isn’t hollow - Yahoo! News

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney refused Sunday to let a low turnout and the absence of some notable opponents diminish his dominant victory in Iowa’s Republican Party Straw Poll.

.

Well, of course he didn’t. Not only would it be foolish to do so from his perspective, but at this point the issue isn’t about object measure, but rather is about perception.

The turnout was, compared to the previous such meeting, pretty anemic:

Eight years ago, about 23,000 people voted in the straw poll. On Saturday, only about 14,000 did. Romney attributed the turnout to heat and the expectation that he would be a runaway victor.

And what happened to the Fred Thompson juggernaut? He came in 7th behind such powerhouses as Huckabee, Brownback, Trancedo, Paul and Tommy Thompson.

Dude, what? You’re picking on Fred Thompson? Who didn’t participate?! Who finished first among non-participants?!? Why not ask what happened to the Giuliani juggernaut?!?!

This isn’t commentary, this is a cheap shot.

My sarcasm was mostly aimed at the press and the pro-Thompsonites who have made him seem like the GOP’s savior in waiting.

Indeed, one would have thought that Fred would’ve participated, given all his flirtations with the party.

Still, and more to the point I find the entire straw poll to be of practically zero usefulness.
