“All of us have to look at it and say that we could be next,” he said in answer to a Vitter question. “We all think that we’re not vulnerable to something like that happening, but the fact is this can be a very lonely and isolating place.”– Senator Jim DeMint (R-SC) in today’s WaPo

While I shall make no assumptions about Senator DeMint, that is an odd statements. One might be tempted to take a broad view on the sentiment and assume that he means having moral failings brought to light in a very public way. However, the reference to DC (I assume that is what he means, if not the Senate specifically) as a “lonely and isolating place” in the context of the Vitter situation suggests at least infidelity, if not prostitution.

I don’t see how we can do anything OTHER than make assumptions about Senator DeMint based on that comment.

This rationale is idiotic. Life for everybody can be “very lonely and isolating” at times–it is an inherent characteristic of the human experience.

Not everyone deals with that emotion by paying strangers for sex–or even having affairs, for that matter.

This type of rationale suggests that Senator DeMint could be featured in a future issue of Hustler–lets just hope there are no photographs involved!

A reasonable person can assume something very different that what others are insinuating.

Watch most any hearing and take a look at the young attractive legislative aides and recognize that power is attractive to many of these people and you see why temptation abounds. I believe he is talking about temptation.

With over five hundred legislators and many more government officials in Washington we can expect the occasional “odd” statement. We need not make anything of them.

Perhaps DeMint has hooked up or whatever. We should at least wait until some facts arrive before making judgements.

    3. Sean Hackbarth Says:

I interpret the quote as realizing anyone in D.C. away from family and their home state could give into loneliness and cheat on their spouse even with a prostitute. The capital is a pressure-packed place where anyone could go astray.

      Thank you, Slick Willie.
