Via the AP/FoxNews: Dick Cheney to Spend Election Day Hunting

U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney will spend Election Day Tuesday on his first hunting trip since he accidentally shot a companion last February while aiming at a covey of quail on a private Texas ranch.

Yes, that sounds like a good idea: remind the voters of one of your most embarrassing moments during office on election day.

Amazing.

I am not sure if this is hubris or being out of touch with reality. Although, to be honest, given Cheney’s public demeanor in regards to Iraq, I am guessing it is a combo of both.

    1. I must say, the first thing I said when I read that headline the other day was “who is he gonna shoot this time?”
      As you said, amazing.

    2. You just have to believe that keeping Cheney is an insurance move on Bush’s part in case of impeachment by a Democratic congress. Yeah, they might impeach him. But even if they get the senate, they’ll never remove him from office!

    3. How silly is it that the man had an accident and for that he should never hunt again? He had hunted his whole life and was good enough all those years to have 1 accident I am sure he wishes it was none however he is a hunter and he will hunt probably for the rest of his life. People need to get over theirselves.

    4. Erin,

It is not that he should never hunt again. However, when one has a publically embarassing incident, and one’s party is experiencing a severe public image problem, it probably is best not to remind evreyone of the embarrassing incident on election day.

If the man wants to hunt, it effects me not one whit. Still, you have to admit that the PR/political angle here isn’t exactly in his favor.

    5. Erin is right. Cheney’s hunting on election day will have no effect on the election and since campaigning is effectively over why not?

Most importantly everyone seems to have forgotten that he is not on the ballot. Many see the accident as nothing more than an accident, not a political liability.

This brings up a greater question: why in the world do we not have an election holiday? Or at least have elections on Saturday or Sunday.

Not all people are as lucky as Dick to be able to take a vacation absence on election day.

Let’s hope that Cheney doesn’t drink a bunch of beer again and start shooting like he did last February.

    7. The fact that Cheney is not on the ballot doesn’t change the fact that he represents his party. Kerry is not on the ballot but I keep hearing his name thrown around in local political ads.

The fact that on election day the campaign is basically over might be a valid argument except for the fact that his hunting trip has been being publicized for several days now, well before the election and in plenty of time to remind the public of earlier mistake.

    8. Jan makes a good point in re: Kerry.

And while the overall effects of the Cheney hunting trip are, no doubt, minimal, the notion that it represents a questionable PR move ought to be pretty obvious.

Let’s just say that on a day where the GOP needs every single vote it can get, even minor issues can count. As such, I find the Veep’s choice of activities for the day to be, as the post ie entitled, politically tone deaf.
