Via the AP: Not it! Mass. elementary school bans tag
Tag, you’re out! Officials at an elementary school south of Boston have banned kids from playing tag, touch football and any other unsupervised chase game during recess for fear they’ll get hurt and hold the school liable.
Well, at least they still have recess in Boston–they eliminated it here some time ago.

I guess that depends on how one defines recess. As a substitute PE coach, I can say with some authority that most days the children play without structured instruction or supervised games when at P.E. Also, the teacher still sometimes take the students outside to play after lunch or during snack times and the kids chase each other around then too.
As to the getting hurt playing tag issue. I have a scar underneath my chin from a tag related injury. It was second grade (I think) and I wasn’t even playing tag. The teacher called us to line up and so I ran to the place we lined up at. One of the boys who had been playing tag saw me running and “tagged” me. In the process he pushed me so hard I fell down and hit my chin on the edge of the cement. I had to go to the doctor and get about 7 stitches. We didn’t sue anybody over it though.

In Montgomery schools they have PE, but no other recess period.

My point is, are they really “supervised” during P.E., or is it really just glorified recess?

Beyond that: does “supervision” mean less likelihood of injury? Probably not.

UGH. There are few things worse than people who are won’t let their kids have a childhood, and for fear of damn lawsuits. Why don’t we just ban children having fun in general? Then they’ll be prepared to be environmentalist vegans when they grow up.

…and that is probably the most depressing thing I’ve read all day. I depend on the South to be rational about these things. *sigh*
